Celebrating Latino Conservation Week a little early.

Grateful to be able to share this opportunity with 25 people.

Thank you to Milwaukee Water Commons for the water school grant opportunity. Thank you to Milwaukee Sailing Center for allowing so many of us to experience sailing for the first time. Thank you to EL REY FOODS. for the conchas and mazapanes.

This was such a fun water experience on Lake Michigan without having to leave Milwaukee and while enjoying Milwaukee County Parks . People left with new friendships and a positive and relaxing water experience.

Come with me to the Walker Square Farmers Market (during my break as the farmers market manager). Part of the reason I started Flor y Raiz MKE was to help increase access to fresh, nutrient dense, locally grown food and encourage more outdoor time. That’s why I love farmers markets. You get to enjoy your local park while supporting your local farmers that bring fresh produce picked that day or the day before.

Right now Walker Square Farmers Market is also participating in Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin Double Up Food Bucks Wisconsin where people with EBT can double (up to $20) for free if they use their EBT card at the market. Check their website to check out several other markets participating in the same program!

When your toddler asks to go to the “store” for a fresh snack.

Fortunate we’re able to grow some fresh food and safely eat knowing our safe growing practices.

We’ll be visiting this weekend to get some fresh produce locally grown by farmers. Knowing your farmer and where your food comes from let’s you ask questions about growing practices and possibly helps reduce the risk of big ag outbreaks. If you see produce you don’t recognize, ask the farmer what their favorite dish to make is. Maybe you’ll find a new favorite vegetable or fruit. 🫜 🥕 🌽 🥗 🥬

The air quality from the wildfires affects us all. Keep yourself safe by staying indoors or wearing masks if you have to go outdoors. Also please consider the wildlife. My daughter and I are out of town for a conference and my partner told me a humming bird flew into the water while he was watering. I asked him to record and send me the video so we could see the hummingbird but it also served as a good reminder that wildlife is trying to survive too. Our actions can have positive (or negative) impacts on them. Leave some water out for them or if they fly while you’re watering your plants keep watering until they fly away. They’re just trying to survive too. What else can you do? You could choose to not use pesticides or herbicides and use nature to help you instead. At Flor y Raiz MKE we believe in working with nature and building the soil life and helping beneficial insects and birds thrive here so they can hep us with pest control.

Learning about three sisters garden. In our garden we planted blue corn from Oaxaca, a pole bean (I forgot which one we planted and didn’t put label 🫠), and melon instead of squash because I started the melon in a soil block from seed and forgot to start quash from seed. The melon was struggling so decided to put the melon and experiment.

We also have quelites and herbs along the border and the fourth sister sunflower in a different bed right next to this one.

Have you tried three sisters? We’d love to hear about it. 🤗

People often ask how I teach in the garden. We teach as we go mostly. Today we were watering the plants and noticed the runners so I pointed them out. She wanted to learn more so I took the opportunity to teach her. It’s in Spanish because we are trying to encourage Spanish at home.

It’s super hot in Milwaukee this week, if you can please leave water for wildlife too. Please walk your dogs before peak sun and on grass so their paws don’t burn. Stay safe and hydrated.

Working on connecting Instagram to fb lol for now ss and copying is what it is lol

I keep saying I’m going to post a reminder for people to sow their marigold seeds and keep forgetting. So here I am quick post to get message across to make sure I don’t forget. Happy gardening Hope to see all your awesome marigolds for day of the dead.

Huge thank you to my mom and Ms. Martin who have literally been my hands since I can only currently use one until the foreseeable future. It takes a village and I cannot thank them enough.

Sigo diciendo que voy a postear un recordatorio para sembrar las semillas de cempasúchil. So aquí estoy escribiendo algo rápido para que no se me vuelva olvidar. Estoy emocionada de ver sus cempasúchil el día de los mu***os.
