It may seem strange to many that fuel shortages have such an impact on the food supply, but crude oil and natural gas are the raw materials from which conventional fertilizers, such as urea, sulfur, and ammonium nitrate, are produced.
To say nothing of the fuel required to ship, till, plant, harvest, process, cool, and transport from seed to table.
โAs growers and food systems thinkers, we are even more concerned about what this means for food security and long-term impacts on human health and survival, even if the conflict ends soon. This article from Purdue University's Center for Commercial Agriculture lays it out clearly:

โThe World Food Program estimates that 318 million people are already experiencing acute hunger, and an additional 45 million people could face food insecurity by the end of 2026 if the conflict continues into mid-year.
โThis is exactly the kind of moment that reminds us why

Unlike a drought or crop disease, the current shock originates in geopolitics, spills into energy markets and propagates through every link of the food supply chain.
