Remember my rodent issue?
I covered the trunks with a burlap sack. I wrapped it around it and tied it. So far I haven’t had anymore problems. I also fired a warning shot at some rabbits that night.
Reasons I haven’t used other methods:
1. Plastic things-I have a young livestock guardian dog that seems to have an obsession with things she doesn’t think belongs, like solar lights that are stuck in the ground, some plants that are planted in the ground, anything still in a plastic planter, plastic anything really. So I really have concerns that when I put a plastic barrier around the trunk she will try to remove it and chew up the tree. 🤦🏻♀️
2. Blood meal sprinkled around the tree area- I have spread mulch very heavily around the area in an attempt to limit the growth of Johnson grass and knock back some Bermuda so it quits trying to choke everything out. In this drought, the trees also need every bit of help they can get with hiding in moisture, so the inches of mulch is to keep in moisture we are going to be getting from this rain coming in AND when the winter comes it will provide some insulation from the cold. That being said, if I sprinkle blood meal around on top of the mulch, the dogs will go crazy digging to try to lick it and you will see one mad farmher because the mulch will be everywhere.
3. Human and dog hair- no one has needed a hair cut yet AND I fully groomed the jacks about a month ago 🤷🏼♀️. Sooooo, I may have to visit one of the local salons to grab a bag of hair and spread it around. This has been one of my most effective methods of deterring rabbits. They avoid areas where I have spread haircut trimmings and dog grooming hair, like the plague. It gives them the false sense that a predator is near and they want nothing to do with it.
