Black Dog Mini Cattle We have been producing short, colorful, and friendly miniature cattle since 2016. Our focus is on Pandas and mini Belties but we have a few others for fun.

I went out to check on the little man and he wasn’t in barn. Mama finally convinced him to follow her outside this morning. He must be feeling good because that hill has got to be quite a trek for those little legs.

Yesterday had the good, the bad, and the ugly.
The good… the little man learned how to nurse off mama and mama figured out what he was trying to do back there.
The bad… his hock was big, fat, and hot. A trip to the vet revealed joint ill, a septic bacterial infection that settles in the joint.
Which leads to the ugly. It’s caused by failure of passive transfer. So he either didn’t get enough colostrum, soon enough, or good enough.
He got a plasma transfer to help with antibodies, a joint flush, and antibiotics. We go back Monday for a recheck.

And he needs a name.

The first calf born, when I just got started with cattle, was born about 5/6 weeks early. Earlier than this guy, he had peach fuzz for hair, no teeth erupted, and couldn’t stand for 10 days. The vet kinda shrugged at me and said lungs are good, 50/50, he’ll make it or he won’t. His best chance is milk the mom, feed the baby.

Despite milking being a massive pain, (I have beef cattle for reason,) I am milking mom to feed the baby. It’s healthier, cheaper, and I do not want a bottle calf. I will do everything in my power to get this little guy nursing. That means mom needs to keep producing while he figures it out. He’s nearly doubled his weight in 4 days.

To see size perspective here’s the calf with my barn cat. A little taller but weighs less. He is so tiny.

He’s early and born to a heifer so I thawed colostrum I keep on hand from a different cow to make sure he receives quality antibodies. He’s so dang small, I’m not sure how well he was able to nurse, if at all. Between the heat and the smoke, I didn’t want to fight with a heifer today. I’ll get a few supplemental feedings in and stick mom in the chute tomorrow.

My herd is scheduled to start calving September 20. This guy decided to make a very early appearance this morning, among the wildfire smoke blowing in from the Ross fire. I’ve never had one this small. He’s only 13 lbs. I’m worried about this one, early is tough enough on lungs without smoke.

I had a fun visit from The Mad Manicurist this weekend. She got to visit with the ladies. I got some amazing nail art, and yes, those are teeth on her nails 😳

It’s just been too hot to function. Trees, breeze, stock tanks, but none offer much relief. I see a cool day (95* 🤣) in the forecast and really hope that stays in there. Calving starts mid September and these ladies are ready.
