Black Dog Mini Cattle

Raven taking her turn with babysitting duty. It’s still so dang hot. We have rain and a front coming in tonight. I’m hoping cooler temps perk these guys up a bit. They’re stressing in winter coats when it’s still 90s and humid.

I don’t like to post the hard parts of ranch life. I’d much rather show reels of babies playing. But, things don’t always go the way I want.
I went out to check cows yesterday afternoon and Tiger Lilly had her calf but she wasn’t alive. I always hate this, especially for the cow. There was nothing obviously wrong, which to me usually means the sack stuck on the face. Tiger was one of my first cows and has never had issues calving so she wasn’t on my close watch list. I left the calf with her overnight but took it this morning. She’s still laying in the same spot she calved 😢. So heartbreaking 💔 to see.

Cheyenne had this pretty little “I think” lady. She’s a bit of a helicopter mom so, as long as all is well, I leave her alone for few days to settle. This is my little token longhorn (doesn’t everyone in Texas need a longhorn). She’s always had such fun, flashy calves.

Talk about low birth weight! This little guy is this cows third calf and they’ve all been in the upper 20lb range. This is a homebred cow that was retained. She was 28 lbs when she was born and her calves have followed suit. The other calves in the photo are a couple weeks old but still such a tiny guy.

I’m amazed these guys can hide behind a tuft of grass. Ms Swan had a teensy dun Highbelt. He looks like velvet.

Out checking cows this morning and mama took serious offense at me trying to get a look at the new guy. He’s getting around pretty good 😆. I’m pretty excited by the little dun panda.

Look what I was just in time to catch this morning. Can’t quite decide if he’s dun or black yet. But what a cutie 🥰
