🐝🍯 Honey Available in Eugene & Junction City Next Week! 🍯🐝

The folks at Misty Meadows Homestead will be heading to the Junction City and Eugene area this coming week, and we'll be bringing our honey with us!

We're making the trip from Washington for a very special reason. Our grandsons' school is hosting a Grandparents Night, and we've been invited to attend. There is nothing more important to us than showing up for our boys and supporting them every chance we get. ❤️

Every jar of honey we sell helps make this trip possible. When you support our homestead, you're supporting our bees, our family, and helping two proud grandparents make special memories with their grandsons.

September is a month of transition. As we move from mid to late month, summer vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, and zucchini start to slow down. In their place, cool-season crops step-into the spotlight — root vegetables, hardy brassicas, and leafy greens become the focus of the garden.

🌿 September To-Do’s for Pacific Northwest Gardeners 🍂

As summer fades, it’s time to pivot in the garden:

✅ Harvest late-summer veggies
🌱 Plant fall + winter crops
🌷 Sow spring-blooming bulbs
🌳 Plant trees & shrubs
🌾 Aerate + overseed lawns
🪴 Add compost + mulch to beds
🌿Prune top half of fall-bearing raspberry canes after final harvest
💚Prune second-year raspberry & blackberry canes. Trellis first year canes

🍯 We’re set up for a bit outside the Mount Rainier Lions Club!

The burger stand is closed, but you can still stop by and pick up some local raw honey from Misty Meadows Homestead and Apiary. And we have several sizes available.

🐝 Our new logo is here—and so are we! 🍯🌼

We’re set up today with a honey pop-up near the Mount Rainier Lions Club, right along the way to Mount Rainier. Stop by, say hello, and pick up some local honey!

I wanted our new logo to be easier to read while still feeling calm, warm, and true to Misty Meadows Homestead & Apiary. And I especially love the yarrow tucked among the flowers—it’s one of my favorite herbs and makes the design feel even more personal.

All of our honey labels will eventually be getting a fresh new look too. We don’t have an exact date for the changeover yet, so you may see our current labels for a while. But the new labeling is coming!

In 1609, an English beekeeper named Charles Butler published a book calling the queen a queen for the first time, and he noticed the same thing every beekeeper has noticed since. In September the hive turns on its own sons.

Drones are the males. They do one thing, which is mate with a new queen in spring, and by now that job is done. They do not forage, they do not guard, they do not make wax, and they eat. So when the last of the goldenrod comes in, the workers stop feeding them, then drag them to the entrance and push them off the board. They are not allowed back in. Every one of them starves within a few days.

The rest of the fall runs on a schedule. The queen slows down and stops laying. The colony shrinks to twenty thousand or so that can last the winter. On the first nights under fifty seven degrees they pull into a ball the size of a football and shiver their flight muscles to hold the center at ninety degrees, taking turns on the cold outside. They will do that until March, eating forty pounds of honey, and not one of them will sleep.

The timeline on the card is the whole story. It is happening in every hive within a mile of you this month. 🐝
