Copper & Kings Distillery is known for their brandy and gin, but in late 2023, they released their first bourbon. Copper & Kings Bourbon is a blend of 5, 10, and 15-year-old Kentucky straight bourbons that have been finished in their own American apple brandy barrels for 12 months and bottled at 111 proof.

Basil Hayden was created in 1992 by the late, great Jim Beam master distiller Booker Noe. It stands out from other Jim Beam Small Batch Collection releases because it is bottled at 80 proof, the minimum strength at which whiskey can be bottled in the US, making it more accessible to novices and still a great cocktail ingredient.

Their latest release is a new rye whiskey made from the relatively unusual mashbill of 100 percent malted rye grain (as opposed to the usual Beam rye whiskey mashbill of just above or exactly the legally required 51 percent rye grain). As a result, Basil Hayden’s Golden Rye offers some extra spice on the palate plus dried fruit, vanilla, brown sugar, caramel, ripe pear, and a hint of licorice.

While previous Angel’s Envy rye releases have been finished in rum casks, this limited small batch release was partially finished for up to a year in extra añejo Patrón tequila French oak barrels. As a result, the sweetness is dialed back, leaving room for the exotic spices in this outstanding new bottle from the Kentucky distiller.
