Earlier this week, our head brewer called to say he had to halt brewery operations because our drains were backing up.
Most people familiar with craft brewing know that WATER is essential to nearly everything we do. What many don't think about is that DRAINS are just as important.
When we called our plumbing company, they couldn't get someone out until the next day unless we paid overtime rates. As an ultra-small business, we always think carefully before spending extra money, so we opted to wait until Tuesday.
After threading the lines and running a camera through the drain system, the plumber found the culprit: seven baby wipes clogging our pipes.
So here's an important PSA:
There is no such thing as a flushable wipe.
Baby wipes, makeup wipes, Dude Wipes, cleaning wipes, and similar products can all cause major plumbing problems. Maybe the person who flushed them simply didn't know, so we're taking this opportunity to spread the word.
Those seven wipes didn't just cost us money to fix—they also caused downtime during one of our busiest times of the year.
For the sake of small businesses everywhere, please only flush toilet paper. While we've never felt the need to post reminder signs in our restrooms before, we'll be doing so now. We've been fortunate not to have encountered this issue sooner, and we hope we can prevent it from happening again.
