🌿 NEW AT DOUBLE T FAMILY FARM — Red Twig Dogwood! ❤️

Pretty in summer… but this shrub saves its best trick for winter. See mature Red Twig Photo 👇

When everything else looks tired and gray, Red Twig Dogwood lights up your landscape with bright red stems that stand out against snow, mulch, or winter blahness.

✔️ Great winter color
✔️ Wildlife friendly
✔️ Nice for borders, natural areas & landscape beds
✔️ Four seasons of interest

These young ones are growing and looking happy… unlike some of us before coffee on a Monday morning. ☕😂

MOCKERNUT HICKORY

Because apparently trees weren’t complicated enough… this one needed a name that sounds like a country insult.

But don’t let the weird name fool you…

It’s a pretty cool tree:

✔️ Native tree
✔️ Wildlife favorite
✔️ Nice shade tree
✔️ This tree is tough, long-lived, and doesn’t ask for much.
So… basically the grandpa of the forest.

Truth is, we planted it last year (apparently while we were on autopilot) along with our Buckeyes and didn’t realize that it was a mockernut until it grew out. Joke’s on us. Lolol.

Dont get too excited. It’s gorgeous….but we only have 1. Live the fuzzy leaves and the lighter green color! Shes about a foot or so tall.

Should we grow more for next year?

🌳 Tree of the Day: Black Walnut! 🌳

Did you know this beauty is more than just a tree?

✔️ Valuable hardwood tree
✔️ Produces edible walnuts (if you’re willing to work for them 😅)
✔️ Loved by squirrels… who plant them EVERYWHERE for free

You can spot a young Black Walnut by its compound leaves with finely toothed leaflets and a single leaf at the tip.

Fun fact: Black Walnut trees naturally produce a compound called juglone, which can make some neighboring plants a little grumpy. Trees with attitude. 😂

Anybody else have volunteer walnut trees popping up in pots, flower beds, or random places around the farm?

Apparently we’re growing more than hazelnuts… 😄🌿🌰

Checking on our hazelnuts today and discovered a few unexpected roommates…

✔️ Volunteer flowers 🌸
✔️ Dill 🌿
✔️ Whatever nature decided to plant while we weren’t looking 😂

Farm life keeps things interesting around here.

Our hazelnuts are doing great… and apparently attracting their own little companion garden.

Question for everybody…

Do you pull volunteer plants… or leave them because you’re curious to see what shows up? 👇

🌳 Tupelo Tree Spotlight! 🌳

Looking for a tree that checks a LOT of boxes? Meet the Tupelo (also called Black Gum).

🍁 Amazing fall color — brilliant reds, oranges, yellows & purples… sometimes all on the same tree!

🐝 Pollinator friendly — Tupelo flowers are loved by bees.

🦌 Adaptable & tough — handles wet soils better than many trees, but also does well in average landscapes once established.

🌿 Native tree — a great choice for supporting local wildlife and ecosystems.

☀️ Sun to part shade

Mature size: roughly 30–50 ft tall (depending on variety & conditions).

Fun fact: Tupelo honey is famous for its unique flavor… and yes… it comes from Tupelo tree blooms! 🍯

🎶 Have you ever heard the song, “Tupelo Honey”, by Van Morrison??? 🎶

Not every tree gets all the attention like maples and dogwoods… but Tupelo quietly earns its spot as a beautiful, hardy landscape tree. ❤️🌳

Most people don’t see this side of the nursery…

Rows of trees quietly growing while the world winds down. 🌳❤️

Oaks, willows, maples, natives, privacy trees, fruit trees… tucked in and doing their thing.

It’s a little messy… a little wild… and we kinda love it that way.

Thank you to everyone supporting our small family farm. We’re growing more than trees over here. 🌱

🌿 When you say you’re only planting “a little mint…” 🌿

Year 1:
“Ohhh… it smells so nice.” 😊

Year 2:
“Look how healthy it is!” 🌱

Year 3:
☠️ YOUR FLOWER BED: “I AM THE CAPTAIN NOW.” ☠️

Featuring me, my emotional support skeleton, and the garden menace known as mint 😂

Friendly PSA from Double T Family Farm:
Mint is wonderful… in a pot.
Unless you enjoy finding mint in places you didn’t even know belonged to your yard.

Who here has been personally victimized by mint? 👇
