Bizzy Bee Honey

Bizzy Bee Honey My name is Stephanie Wasserman and in the Spring of 2022 I decided to tackle the adventure of bee keeping!

I will be harvesting some honey in the future and possibly make some Mead. Stay tuned to learn and see what bee keeping is all about!

It's been 2 weeks since I caught a swarm from a friend's hive. I checked them about 6 days ago and was feeling discouraged because the queen wasn't showing any signs of laying eggs. I was told to wait till about 2 weeks out to check on the queen... Welp I went out tonight and we have eggs!!! I found my accidental honey frame was built out fully with extra comb and in that frame you can see "rice" in the bottom which is a day old egg!!! Yay we have a laying queen! Now to keep feeding them sugar so they can build up some more frames! The eggs are usually easier to find on deep frames because the foundation is black instead of white like on a super frame. But alas I still found them :) it's a happy day!

Caught a swarm yesterday from a good beekeeping friend. Brought it home around 8pm last night and they stayed in the garage since the temps are in the high 40s. Decided to put them into the hive today and this is how it went!

Just minding my own business as I pick some cilantro, watch how they attach pollen to their back legs!

The most dreaded thing to see when looking at your hive! SWARM CELLS! I couldn't find the queen. So I tried to move some of the bees and some frames with babies into a new hive. I will have to keep an eye on them over the next few days to see if I made a difference! By the way.. hard to take pics with leather gloves on lol

Went into my hives today,
Big hive: tons of bees and brood about ready to hatch... Not many extra resources like honey and pollen. Gave some pollen sub and will start liquid feed tonight. Candy board and extra sugar completely gone. Will have to add a super shortly due to how many bees there are. Didn't see many 1-5 day eggs

Small hive: top box weighs about 30lbs..lots of pollen and honey stores. Brood about to start hatching and saw day old eggs. Added extra pollen sub as well. Don't necessarily need to start liquid feeding with all the honey they still have. But will shortly to help with wax production. There was still a decent amount of sugar on the candy board.

No swarm cells or queen cells in either so that's good! I removed both candy boards as well.

Also dummy me was like... Oh I will switch the deeps on my small hive and after I finished putting it together with the lid, I looked at the front of the hive. I forgot about my mouse guard lol. It was attached to the top box and I didn't want to mess with it so I had to rearrange it back to how it was 😂.

I will probably have to split my big hive soon since there are so many bees in it.
