H & E Sod Nursery Inc.

H & E Sod Nursery Inc. H & E Sod is the oldest sod farm in Illinois. H & E Sod was started in 1947 by Carl Habenicht on 60 Acres in what is now Country Club Hills IL.

H & E Sod Nursery has been serving the needs of landscape professionals, golf course superintendents, and homeowners for more seven decades. Fred Ehrich and one of his sons Alfred the “E” in H & E, worked part time for Illinois Turf Company prior to WW II. Illinois Turf went out of business because they could not find help during the war. In the winter of 1946 Fred Ehrich approached his son-in-law

Carl Habenicht, the “H” in H & E, to start up a sod farm. In 1947 they planted 15 acres of common bluegrass went to Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, Illinois and picked up some C-15 bentgrass sprigs and planted 1 acres of C-15 vegetatively. From these very modest roots, H & E Sod Nursery was born. H & E Sod Nursery now grows the best of bluegrasses, bentgrasses, and fescues on two sod farms that measure over 800 hundred acres. H & E Sod now operate a fleet of seven semis to bring our product into Chicagoland area. H & E supplies sod to landscape depots, garden centers and big box stores for landscapers/homeowners to pick up product.
