This past Saturday I taught a breed study class on Herdwick sheep. I had such a wonderful time! A huge thank you to Judith of Herdwick Sheep - Grass Hill Farm for joining my Breed Study class. It was such a delightful conversation, I didn't want it to end!

What a wonderful afternoon I had learning about Herdwick with A Woolen Forest. I was so impressed with the depth and breadth of Alejandra's excellent breed study presentation. Even though I raise these cheeky sheep, I learned a lot! It was an honor to have been part of the group.

The bulk of our Sunday mornings are spent skirting and washing wool. Today we are going through this North Country Cheviot grown in Wamandee, Wisconsin!! Look at the beautiful crimp on this fleece. The crimp will trap air making an exceptionally warm yarn for our arctic winters.

Let’s “travel” together to the lush and rugged countryside of England’s Lake District as we explore the region’s iconic Herdwick sheep. In this online breed study we will learn about the unique history of Herdwick sheep, their conservation, and how they have historically contributed to the production of textiles. Students will have the opportunity to spin various samples of Herdwick roving, process the fiber, and study fleece in its unprocessed form.

This breed study will also include a bonus featuring a live Q&A with very special guest Judith Hooper of Grass Hill Farm, who will share her experience raising and breeding Herdwick sheep. We are in for a real treat!

Registration fee includes a materials kit with roving and washed wool from multiple Herdwick sheep. Kits will be mailed prior to the date of the class. Registration fee also covers the cost of shipping.

The online class will be held via Zoom from 11am - 1:30pm (CT). A recording of the class will be made available to participants for 30 days.

I am very excited to be teaching a super special spinning breed study class this September at The North American Hill Sheep Show!! Class details are below.

Introducing an NAHSS Fiber Workshop!
REGISTER ON THE SHOWMAN APP IN THE "SPONSOR SHOW" TAB

"Spend the day with us as we study and spin various Hill Sheep Breeds.
In this breed study we will learn about the history and culture of five Hill Sheep Breeds and how they have historically contributed to the production of textiles. Students will have the opportunity to spin and process fiber from the five breeds, study the wool in its raw form, and view both knitted and woven sample swatches of each of the breeds.
This class is a wonderful blend of historical, visual, and tactile learning.

The five breeds we will spin and study include Herdwick, Scottish Blackface, Cheviot and others.

Drop spindles available for use, but students are welcome to bring their own spinning wheels."

Six student minimum. 12 student maximum, approximately 3 hours

$75/student, all materials provided for $35 materials fee paid directly to instructor at time of class.

***In the event that class does not meet minimum number of students, or any other reason out of the NAHSS's control, class fees ($75) will be refunded, less card processing fees. The NAHSS is not responsible for costs associated with travel, lodging, etc.***
