Black Velvet at 13 months. I’m still holding this girl back to see how she develops before deciding which of last year’s three jennet foals to keep. She string tests to over 15hh but we shall see. She has the silkiest coat (it’s how she got her name), is very affectionate and friendly, and smart as a whip. Gypsy x Lincoln, full sister to the jack foal born two weeks ago.

I missed the most amazing photo tonight after the rain ended. The entire herd was standing together with the widest, most vibrant rainbow I’d ever seen as their backdrop. Unfortunately I didn’t have my phone on me and by the time I got it from my truck and ran back, most of the donkeys had left, and so had most of the rainbow.

This guy is such a fuzzy lover! 😍 In fact I’ve been trying to get new photos of him all week and it’s so difficult since he won’t stay far enough away. I even tried petting him with one hand while pressing the shutter with the other, but at arms length I was too close to fit his huge ears in the frame. I finally got a chance when he was fixated on the kitties and younger foal.

He is Lincoln’s third foal now and they’ve all had great temperaments and beautiful heads. He is *exceptionally* gentle and affectionate—I was petting him for a solid hour straight last night until I finally had to leave to get chores done, and he held perfectly still the whole time just enjoying it, and then tried to follow me when I left. He will even abandon the milk bar mid-drink to make a beeline for petting and affection. Keep an eye on this page for updates and more photos—both of these latest jack foals will be available sometime after weaning.

It’s another boy! Big Mama abruptly walked off by herself to the far corner of the pasture around 8 pm so I knew it was going to be tonight. Went to fix an offline camera overlooking this area and when I got back to check her again (the coyotes were howling really close and making me nervous) it was already over, I missed it by just minutes. He’s currently standing and trying to nurse with Scout guarding them both nearby and a very curious doe watching us just on the other side of the fence.

This jack foal is a little over a week old now and so sweet. He will hold perfectly still for all the scratches and petting he can get. I caught him at a rare moment between zoomies last night, his latest thing is approaching one of last year’s foals that his mom doesn’t want near him, especially if she isn’t watching or is too far away to stop him. He seems to be targeting her on purpose simply because she is forbidden 😂

I was out in the dark last night making sure this little guy was nursing, and the weirdest thing happened. I had already removed the afterbirth right away since there are coyotes, fishers, and eagles around here. All of a sudden his mama perked up to watch something in the pasture just a little ways away from us. I couldn’t see anything since there was barely any moonlight and assumed it was just the cats that followed me. But when I repeatedly called their names with no response at all, I flipped my headlight on only to realize it was a pair of does drawn to the scent of the fluids in the birthing spot. They would not leave it alone, didn’t care how close I was, and stayed for several minutes circling and zigzagging the exact spot with intense interest and their noses to the ground before eventually moving on. Maternal instinct is so strong.

This is my favorite part of the foaling process, and although it’s difficult to capture in a photo, it’s almost magical to witness in person and the jennets all do it: after they’ve finished the hard part and while they are quietly recovering from the exhaustion and pain of labor, they lift up their head and turn around to look at their foal. And then their whole demeanor instantly changes, just like that… their face softens, their ears prick forward, and they radiate the most genuine look of love for that wet little bundle of legs and ears 🥰

These two ladies are both getting very close to foaling. Big Mama is on the left and her daughter Gypsy on the right. This is the first time I’ve been able to line their foaling dates up so close to each other, and they will very likely take turns sharing babysitting duties (which always makes it easier on the mamas).
