The love of the land was our motivation to find a place like The Back Forty Farm to call home. Katahdin sheep have been a major part in helping restore the soil and combating brush, and this has greatly reduced the need for chemical sprays or machine-based land clearing. Not only does this make our forest more usable, but provides us with healthier trees, and greatly reduces the available fuel for

a wildfire. The Katahdin was an excellent choice for us and we fell in love with this amazing breed of sheep. They have great mothering traits, Nonshearing (hair sheep), great foragers, and mild-flavored lean healthy meat. We are a small family farm living our dream of raising our own food sustainably and on pasture. We are your local source for whole lamb or breeding stock.

Heimdall is in post-op jail. He is 22 months already and it was time to go to our Veterinarian and get neutered.
We like to run males together as a pack and neutering them, well, makes them compatible.
Odin is out with the sheep during the day, and Loki is locked up with Heimdall recuperating for a back injury. I've never put an E - collar on a livestock guardian dog, but with confinement and proper sedation he's doing great! One odd thing, he has spots under his fur, you can see it where they shaved his arm.🤔intresting.
A few more days and he's ready to be back with the flock.

The sheep are enjoying the new pastures. They start of eating close to the fence line then work their way back into the woods. The woods are why we have livestock guardian dogs. Odin, Loki and Heimdall are exploring deep into the woods and marking their new territory.

Moments around the farm.....
We have been so busy working on the fenceline that we haven't had time to slow down. Everything is so green, wildflowers are popping up all over. (along with the poison oak)😒
We even had time to vaccinate the lambs, that's why they have pink feet. Wally gave the injection, and I tagged the foot or feet!🤣 That's one thing about hurting my hand he's taken over a lot of my work and doing a great job 👍🏻

More pictures of our fencing project. We had some help♥️😁The grandkids

Almost done with fencing. Really excited that this will give us 7 pastures to rotate through. So fun watching the sheep in areas they have never been on before.

I haven't posted very much, we have been busy working on adding more pastures. I'm not much help with one hand so it's taking us a little longer.
The ewes are really shedding their winter coats and the lambs are growing big. The oldest are almost 3 months! The triplets will be 6 weeks Monday, they are eating and chewing their cud!
Enjoy your spring ❤️

Triplets and Red are doing well. We still can't get the littlest to take a bottle, so we've started offering creep feed and we will keep tube feeding her twice a day. You can see they are starting to nibble on mom's food.

The Triplets are getting stronger. The littlest one may need a supplemental bottle, but for now everyone is gaining.
