Makalea Maple Grove Farm

Makalea Maple Grove Farm A small family farm, raising our own food & sharing with neighbors. We have veggies, grains, pigs, cows, goats, sheep, chickens, turkeys, geese, & ducks.

We are a diverse family farm located near Pedee, Oregon. We practice sustainable farming and grow most of our own food using natural farming techniques. Along with several acres of garden we keep bees, a dairy cow, beef cows, pigs, goat, chickens, turkeys, geese, and ducks. We sell what we don't eat at Polk County Bounty Market, through our CSA and at our farm stand.

We recently took in a very pregnant stray cat as we needed another barn cat. We were thinking she’d have 4 or so kittens. Yesterday she gave birth to 9 kittens!

Trigger Warning - I’m going to talk about butchering but no pictures of it.

We raise our own meat and that involves butchering but it also involves animals used for breeding purposes that are less than desirable for food. For one they are tough and second we have more of a relationship with them. But they can’t live on the farm forever and so we butcher them, cook them and they become dog food. Our dogs are an important part of our homestead life and they get real food of butchered meat, rice, and canned veggies.

We produce 95% of our own food and food production takes up a lot of our time but we also produce our own herbal tinctures, salves, and teas. So as we are busy harvesting food, we are also busy harvesting herbs.

I am not good at flower arranging. Probably quite the opposite, but I sure do love bringing fresh flowers in the house. Right now I am adding valerian to every bouquet. The smell is so relaxing.

Harvested 20 pounds of new potatoes from the hoop house. This is an important part of our plan to feed ourselves year around. Our main crop potatoes are harvested in August. They store in the cellar until April when the remainders are used as seed and replanted again. That means we have a potato gap from May - July. By planting some in the hoop house in February, I eliminated the gap.

The not so pretty parts of farming. Today we are having to go through the hay field and remove all the tansy which is toxic to certain animals. This requires us to walk through the fields and remove it all by hand by either pulling it up or digging it out.

We had a lovely vacation in a tropical location for the past week. The food was great but it was such a blessing to come home and harvest breakfast. Strawberries, eggs, new potatoes, kale, wine cap mushrooms and onions.
