Birdsong Farm

Birdsong Farm We are a small family homestead in Pedee, Oregon specializing in pasture raised poultry, producing duck eggs, chicken and muscovy duck.

We also raise new zealand rabbits and grow vegetables, herbs and flowers without chemicals. Birdsong Farm is a small family homestead in Pedee, Oregon. Established in 2012 by artists Andy and Miranda Rommel. Our mission is to live in harmony with our piece of soil, do our best to improve it as we farm and to grow as much of our food as we can while also selling quality meat, eggs and produce to ou

r local communities. We raise small livestock (rabbits, ducks, chickens) that are treated with respect and give us joy while being gentle on the environment (and delicious on the plate.) Animal lovers, nature lovers, foodies and artists, Andy and Miranda know how lucky we are to live this simple lifestyle and thank YOU for your support!

Thanks to Richard Little who helped me identify our new friend! I am so excited to have a new type of native bee utilizing our colonies.

Id: Megachilidae, specifically a Megachile which include the leafcutter bees.

Yay, bees!

I used to have a soap business: N**e Soap. I made vegetable oil based, cold processed soap with no artificial additives. I focused on pairing essential oils and botanicals for a luscious bath experience. I sold at markers, online and at the local Market of Choice.

Fast forward a decade or so and now I just make soap for my family's use and have traded the vegetable oils for lard. We don't raise hogs but we do purchase locally raised pork from farmers we trust and often end up with a lot of fat! One can only eat so much lard in a year so soap is the perfect product to make with a bunch of lard. Bonus that you can render the lard with botanicals right in the pot to infuse the fat with their beneficial properties.

This batch includes lard infused with CBD and lavender flowers and got the fun addition of some bentonite clay, lemongrass essential oil and poppyseeds! I can't wait to enjoy this cheerful soap in the shower soon.

I have considered offering classes on how to make soap in this way. Is that something you would be interested in? Let me know in the comments.

Tis the season to clean your Mason Bee cuccoons!

Mason bees are a native pollinator who really benefit from a little help. By cleaning and storing the cuccoons in the fridge over winter we help protect them from birds and other predators and minimize the risk of emerging too early or using up food stores too quickly during temperature fluctuations.

Part of cleaning and sorting the cuccoons is identifying parasitic wasp cuccoons and removing them. They are darker and skinnier than the bees. I was curious and snipped the tip off of one of the cuccoons and out popped a fully formed (if sleepy) wasp! Squish!!

Unfortunately I also did a test snip on a bee cuccoon that was well dented. The instructions I have from OSU advise removing the dented cuccoons because their larva didn't mature. Sadly, mr. Bee was just fine in his dented cuccoon and waking him up early was a death sentence. So sorry, friend. But now I know for the future!

Science is fun! I don't know everything about Mason bees but I do know some and have good resources to recommend so feel free to ask questions!
