Monmouth College Educational Garden The Monmouth College Educational Garden began in 2010 and is funded by a generous grant from the EPA. Service is a fundamental principle in the Garden project.

In 2010 Monmouth College faculty and students established a campus garden, with assistance from an EPA Environmental Education grant and allocation of trustee project funds. Guided by faculty and run by students, the Campus Garden aims to provide students with the ability to explore how our current food systems function and where potential for improvement lies. Students grow their own food, share

produce with the community, sponsor workshops and informational sessions, and seek innovative solutions to complex social and economic problems having to do with food systems. The students who manage the Garden (and who live in an adjacent college house) collaborate with community partners and engage the Monmouth community. The students donate produce to the local food pantry, present on the benefits of maintaining and eating from a garden, offer demonstration workshops, and serve as advisors to similar programs starting up in the city. The students and faculty associated with the Garden seek to educate the surrounding community on the benefits of sustainable, small-scale agriculture while also sharing in the bountiful yield. THE FARM
We are also currently developing a 6 acre farm which was donated to the MCEG. Currently it has an orchard, bee hives, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, asparagus, chickens, corn, squash, beans, & more!

We have water access at the garden now! Thank you so much to the City of Monmouth and Advanced Plumbing for making our goals of being able to grow more plants, and becoming better equipped to serve the community, possible. We’ve already started breaking in the pumps and have been loving it!

Keeping the theme of World Bee Day from yesterday, here’s an apiary update! We have added 3 swarms to our apiary in the last month, and they all were found on one of our apple trees at the farm. This is the largest apiary we may have ever had, and we’re only looking to keep getting better!
