A Love Letter to Farriers from Veterinarians
Dear Farrier, our partner in grime and glue,
We see the world a lot like you do.
Tired and sore, back screaming by noon,
Wondering quietly, will I be done soon?
Your anvil rings, our syringes click,
Both of us dodging a well-aimed kick.
Because horses, bless them, majestic and grandâ
Can still try to kill you with one hind stand.
Your jobâs no jokeâitâs sweat, skill, and art,
Balancing angles down to the smallest part.
While someone leans in with a confident tone,
âI saw on YouTubeâyou could just fix that bone?â
Ah yes, the experts, they come in droves,
With opinions on angles, breakover, and toes.
As if a trim is a quick little tweak,
Not a craft youâve spent decades to perfect each week.
We get itâwe do. We hear it all too:
âCanât you just inject it and make it like new?â
As if biology bends to demand,
Like a wrench in a very determined hand.
But you know, and we know, and deep down itâs trueâ
Thereâs no magic shortcut for what we both do.
No instant fixes, no overnight cure,
Just patience and practice and knowledge thatâs sure.
Out in the cold, with fingers gone numb,
Wind howling loud, making conversations dumb,
Youâre under a horse, weâre holding a leadâ
Both wondering why we didnât choose a desk job indeed.
And yet here we are, side by side,
Egos aside, with horses our guide.
Because when we work together, not apart,
Thatâs when the magic really can start.
You shape the hoof, we treat whatâs within,
Two halves of a wholeâwhere soundness begins.
So hereâs to the texts, the calls, and the plans,
The âwhat do you think?â and âcan you come scan?â
We love our farriersâsteady and true,
Thereâs no better teammate we could ask for than you.
So letâs keep collaborating, hoofbeat by hoof,
Keeping horses comfortable, balanced, and sound from the ground up.
With respect, sore backs, and frozen toes,
And a deep understanding of how this all goesâ
Sincerely,
Equine Veterinarians
