This morning was a stressful one for me. Ultimately everything worked out well but we haven’t had a goat go over 2 hours between kids before. Gracie easily delivered a big buck kid at 06:15 this morning - I didn’t even get to have my coffee! We knew there was another thanks to the ultrasound. Gracie and I got him cleaned up and he was up and nursing quickly. The next 2 hours was spent with Gracie lying down ever so often, pushing once or twice and getting up again. I went in after 90 min and there were feet way deep inside - couldn’t feel the head at all so jiggled and pushed back a little. Figured the head was back and everything was too far for me to reach - not even in the canal. Called our amazing vet Rogers Veterinary Service and after explaining the situation Keelan was going to head on over.
Well something I did must have stimulated something because of course as soon as I got off the phone and Gracie lay down again a second amniotic sac bubble appeared with two pushes…After a few more ups and downs I was able to call Keelan to send him back home for breakfast. Smaller, second kid was born still fully en caul. After some furious cleaning and lots of fluid removal she was pronounced alive and a gorgeous dark brown little doe.
Then things got slightly more stressful, cleaned up and checked over she was alert but not enthusiastic. At this point her brother had gulped down more colostrum than could be considered his ‘share’ and was basically monopolizing mom’s attention and getting in the way. Little girl was alert but completely failing to find the teat despite Nathan and I taking it in turns to help whilst the other body checked her brother. Gracie was actually looking worried herself and at some point I milked out three ounces of colostrum into a bottle just in case. I tried to feed little girl but the screaming she managed at that point was the most energetic she had been so, we resorted to trying to be patient, waking her up and guiding her in the right direction whenever she looked like she wanted to give up.
Two and a half hours later she finally got the hang of this udder thing and I really needed my coffee.
My grandmother had an oft repeated phrase; “Patience is a virtue and a virtue is a grace”. I think Basalt and Bramble Gracie’s Patience is going to be fine! This is Gracie’s second kidding and first daughter 😉
Her brother is kinda cute too…and already rotund with cute knee socks. Patience will stay, we already have 3 other bucks this year…
Every year, every kidding, it’s something new….
