Hi friends,
I am going to discontinue my Phoenix Farm site with this last post, since the farm is now being run by David and Sarah Wolfe, who have a Facebook site called Four Loves Farm. Please go to their site if you are interested in their CSA, senior farmshare, Farmer's Market, or farmstand for 2014. David and Sarah, under the auspices of Foundation for Hope and Grace, have received a grant to provide a supportive residence to 3 formerly homeless women, who will choose to learn work skills, advance their education and learn farm production and marketing.
You can follow Nancy's food policy, school gardening and conservation work at my Nancy Chandler page. Thanks for your past interest in Phoenix Farm, and those of you who have participated in Phoenix Farm's nutrient dense foods. I hope you will continue to come to 191 South Monmouth Rd, Monmouth or Crystal Springs Farmer's Market next season for delicious, nutritious, organically raised produce.

Transplanting of onion, shallots, and leeks is happening at Phoenix Farm. Please get in your $100 deposit soon, since the 40 CSA spots are filling up quickly. If you bring your deposit and registration form to the farm, you will receive a bonus of fresh radishes, and salad greens from our solar greenhouse. We look forward to keeping our shareholders healthy by eating an abundant variety of fresh, organic produce. Two share sizes are available, for the 6 months harvest season. The 2 to 4 person share cost $23.65/week and the individual share cost $16/week. If you eat a lot of veggies, this is probably how much you spend at the grocery store, yet our produce is much fresher & organic, so it's loaded with vitamins, minerals and nutrients your body needs to stay healthy.

This wonderful sunny, warm weather is allowing our fields to dry out and we are getting ready to prepare our early field for transplanting onions, leeks, scallions and shallots. Now is a great time to sign up for our family or individual farm share. When you come to the farm with your $100 deposit, we are offering fresh garlic bulbs and shoots and large bunches of collards. This season starts July 11 and goes weekly for 3 months, followed by 3 monthly shares of storage vegetables including carrots, beets, onions, winter squash, pie pumpkins, kale, and dry beans. These veggies will keep for at least a month, so you can enjoy fresh, organic veggies for 6 months for $450/family or $300 individual. Come out to the farm for a delightful walk around the fields, look at elderberry & hazelnut bushes along the creek, and watch new leaves come out on the blueberries, raspberries and wild plants. Come join the fun of watching nature, and reaping it's abundant harvest!

The salad greens, sugar snap peas, bok choy, and radishes are growing geometrically in the high tunnel with the recent weeks of sunny days and warmer weather. We had a picnic inside yesterday in our shorts, since it was 89 degrees, and we had to open vents when the sun was out. Humid and tropical, and no expense or time needed to travel there. If you join our CSA this month, you too can enjoy a taste of these early delicious greens that we all are craving. Formal CSA share distribution will go for 6 months, but later in the season, starting July 11 thru early Jan. Call 933-9370 or email nchan .com to get a brochure or ask ?s.

The last Winter Farmers' Market at St Mary's Nutrition Center, on Bates St across from Kennedy Park is next Thursday, April 18. Don't miss the fun of this local food feast, and abundance of delightful foods, soaps, earrings, herb teas and crafts from 5 to 7:30PM. I would go early to get the full choice of three local soups, a green salad and fresh bread, which cost only $7.

Come join the fun of watching food grow, eating seasonally, and keeping your body loaded with healthy nutrients from many kinds of fruits and vegetables!

CSA and Chandler family members have been planting cold hardy seeds in the high tunnel, including sugar snap peas, spinach, radishes, bok choy and leaf lettuce. The soil temperature has a daily range of 48 to 60 degrees, and the air temp gets up to 70 or 80 on a sunny day. Lots of little seedlings are popping their heads out, despite the still frosty nites outside the greenhouse. CSA members, who will come and w**d or water, are welcome to share in the bounty of this early harvest.
Please ignore the prices listed in my earlier posting on Facebook. After calculating the value of produce received by shareholders last year, I have readjusted prices to the larger amounts of produce received in July through Sept. Large shares will cost $450 and single shares $300. Working shareholders will receive a $50 discount for full shares or $40 discount for a single share, if they give 15 hours of farm work over the season. Delivery is still available to Winthrop, Brunswick or Lewiston for $30 for 16 weeks.
10 weeks of flower and herb shares cost $70.
Qualifying seniors, 60 years and older, receive a $50 discount thru the Senior Farmshare program.
