Let’s talk about SEPTORIA. Every outdoor garden in Maine has some, it’s the most common question I get. Kinda looks like older leaves got peppered with birdshot. It is a ā€œfungal leaf spotā€disease, lesions have a necrotic-center-with-defined-border look. Sometimes tiny black pycnidia (fruiting bodies) are visible which bear the spores that can lurk in the soil to infect next year’s crop. Backsplash from rain or overhead irrigation is a culprit for spreading spores onto leaves, and persistent moisture on leaves fosters growth of the disease.

But here’s my hot take: don’t worry about septoria! It’s unsightly, but it doesn’t touch the flower and it can’t knock down yield or quality from a truly healthy, well-adapted plant. We don’t try to suppress it (with copper or biological options, which do help) rather, we select for the plants that thrive despite septoria.

This plant is a volunteer autoflower that we let do its thing, showing off the inspiring possibilities of a July harvest and a tidy bouquet of nice looking flower despite incidence of septoria.

Nice cilantro seed harvest today. Last year we got very little but this year it’s abundant, such a blessing.
