Getting them ready to move out on Monday!

We cut one from our truckload herd that was just too fuzzy. He’d stick out so much in a group of slick, short haired steers. There’s nothing wrong with him health-wise or structurally, just didn’t fit in visually. We will sell him separately off the farm to someone looking for a single quality steer to finish feeding out.

Across America, farmland is disappearing and with it, the way of life that feeds us.

There’s a lot more at stake when a farm changes hands than just a piece of property.

It’s family history. It’s generations of work. It’s the places where babies grew up, where lessons were learned, where early mornings and long days became a way of life.

We’ll keep doing what our family has always done: care for the land, care for the cattle, teach the next generation and hold onto this place for as long as we’re blessed enough to do it.

Because we’re not just preserving land.

We’re preserving a way of life.

They’re growing, they’re matching, they’re getting ready!

Building a feeder truckload is a little more than just feeding them and watching them grow.

As this group comes together, we’re also paying attention to the ones that *don’t quite fit*
The standouts. The oddballs. The ones that may be perfectly fine but just don’t match the type of herd we’re building.

So here’s what we culled from the group and why.

Our goal is to put together a consistent, uniform load of feeder steers that’s ready to head out west. Sometimes that means making a few cuts along the way to make the whole herd stronger.

We worked 80 steers this morning before the North Carolina sun started roasting us.
Here’s how the morning went:

6:30 AM - Sunrise. Meet at the barn.

6:50 AM - Start pushing the steers in from the pasture and round up a few stragglers. Ellie, the blue heeler, is approximately 100 years old with zero formal training… but she’s a helpful part of the crew.

6:55 AM - Sunrise photo on the way to the corral

7:10 AM - All 81 head gathered in the corral.

7:15 AM - Prep is key! Vaccines mixed, syringes filled, sticky-note directions ready, and the headcount notebook in hand.

7:15 AM - Stopped to take another sunrise photo. Priorities.

7:25 AM - Let’s get to work! First steer in the chute.

9:00 AM - All done! 5 sorted out and 76 steers turned back out.
