These adorable little guys need to be socialized with as many different people as possible. So they need folks to come snuggle them!

We currently have openings at the following times:

Stay cool with our lovely Cool Cucumber or all-natural Peppermint Lemongrass soaps! The peppermint even leaves a cooling touch on your skin, it feels absolutely delightful in this warm weather. I always swap out the soaps in my own house for the peppermint at this time of year, it feels so good after working in the garden!

The babies are now integrated with the herd!

We like to keep new moms and their kids separate for the first couple of days, allowing them to share a fenceline with the other goats but giving them space to bond privately together. It seems to be less stressful for many of the moms, and Nellie was enough of a helicopter parent that we figured she’d appreciate a few days alone with her babies.

By Thursday night she was spending a lot of time standing at the gate to the main field, however, so we went ahead and let everyone mingle. It went perfectly!

After several days “talking” to each other at the fenceline, everyone pretty much knew each other already. We’re able to set things up so that both the birthing space and the small paddock we use for new moms are all fully visible to the rest of the herd, and that seems to really help everyone get used to the new additions.

We’ll keep separating Nellie and kids into their own space at night for a few more days, just to make sure Nellie has access to all the nutrition she needs without competition from the others. But before long, everyone will just be loose together 24/7.

Super happy with how calm everyone has been with these sweet, gentle baby boys! :D

Happy Farmstand Friday! The weather is absolutely perfect, and we’ve got NEW goodies to share!

Delicious garlic scapes are in, NEW refills for our solid dish soap sets, and for the crafters out there, blown duck egg shells.

We also have a NEW soap scent, perfect for this sunny weather – Cool Cucumber!

There’s a fresh stock of salves, candles, and magnesium spray from the Ol-Red Bread Shed Homestead, plenty of plants and seeds, herbs, cat toys, and of course fresh farmhouse bouquets once again featuring gorgeous roses for just $4.

And YES, we have duck eggs!

Mama goat Nellie is a bit of a helicopter mom! The boys are never out of her sight, and she's constantly checking in on them with a sniff or quiet, tiny bleats just to make sure all is well.

Most of the goats we got as adults came from farms that bottle-raise. That generally means that once the kids have had colostrum, they're separated from the dam and bottle fed by their humans.

There are a number of valid reasons for doing so - keeps the mom's udder in good condition, allows better control over milk flow, can prevent the transmission of some diseases, and it makes for super friendly goats that see humans as the source of all good things.

We choose to dam raise, however, and it's fascinating to see how goats raising their own kids for the first time behave. Nellie is doing a great, if slightly overprotective, job! 😁

Piglets are here!
These little cuties started rooting the moment their little snouts peeked out of their travel carriers. They were so happy to be back on solid ground after their big road trip.
Four of these little guys are Mangalitsa/Duroc crosses, and the one with spots is Berkshire/Duroc.
As usual, they'll spend the first few days in a small pen next to the kitchen where we can keep an especially close eye on them. Once they're all settled in, they'll move to their first big wooded pasture!
