Do we have a problem with red horses and chrome? No it’s not a problem to us at all 🫰😉

The snaffle tells a horse the answer. The hackamore says no, that’s not it.

Two different tools. Two different conversations. And you need both to build a complete horse.

The snaffle is direct. You pick up a rein and you’re pointing toward something… a shape, a position, a feel. You’re giving the horse the answer. That’s where we start, because a young horse needs to be shown before they can be expected to find it on their own.

The hackamore flips that. The pressure says not this, and then the release is when the horse moves away from wrong and stumbles into right.

They’re not being told the answer anymore. They’re being asked to find it.
That shift is everything.

A horse that’s only ever been given the answer will always need to be told. A horse that’s learned to search… that’s felt the satisfaction of finding it themselves… that horse starts to think. And a thinking horse is what this whole program is built around.

We love it when the first rides go this well! Quiet, relaxed, forward movement is the plan on our first rides outside.

Good horse training isn’t about avoiding problems, it’s about creating the right ones.

Every time you step into the pen, you’re either building confidence or chipping away at it. The difference is in how you set the problem up. When the pressure is clear, the release is fair, and the ask is within reach, you’re not just teaching a maneuver. You’re teaching your horse how to try. You’re showing them that working through pressure leads somewhere good.

That’s the foundation everything else is built on.
A finished horse isn’t made in one big moment. It’s made in a thousand small ones… a thousand little yes’s stacked on top of each other.

Yes, I’ll yield that shoulder.

Yes, I’ll soften to the bit.

Yes, I’ll step under and push.

Yes, I trust where you’re pointing me.

Each one feels small. Each one is small. But string enough of them together and you don’t just have a horse that does the job. You have a horse that wants to do the job. A horse that shows up soft, willing, and ready to try.

That’s what we’re building at Nix Performance Horses. Not perfection from day one. Just the next yes.
