Turning Gravel into a Garden! 🌱🚜

At the Tucker Urban Farm, one of our primary planting areas presented a challenge. The space was once covered in gravel, making it difficult to till for traditional planting. While it would have been perfect for raised beds, we wanted to reclaim and utilize the existing ground.

Instead of tilling, we used a no-till sheet mulching (lasagna gardening) approach. Our process included:
* A thick layer of hay to build organic matter and retain moisture.
* A layer of quality topsoil to create a healthy growing medium.
* W**d control fabric to suppress weeds while allowing us to establish clean planting rows.

Our test plot covered 100 feet, where we planted:
* Two rows of Purple Hull Peas
* Two rows of Yellow Sweet Corn

The results? Success!

From just the first 50 feet, we harvested an outstanding crop of Purple Hull Peas, and yesterday we picked several beautiful ears of sweet corn. This simple no-till method proved that even land that appears difficult or unproductive can be transformed into a thriving growing space.

Thanks to Fortitude Leadership Academy, we found that innovation doesn't always require expensive equipment, sometimes it just takes a willingness to think differently. We're excited to continue expanding this approach across the Tucker Urban Farm and sharing what we learn with our community.

I can remember growing up when my dad would slaughter a hog. Folks passing by would stop, jump in, help with the work, and leave with a little something for their labor.

Today, I figured I'd try that same concept with a collard harvest.

I started pulling fresh collard leaves from the back of my truck, thinking somebody passing by might stop and lend a hand. Well... ain't nobody stopped for nothing! 😂

So I rolled up my sleeves and got to work. After harvesting, cleaning, cutting, washing, and packaging, I ended up with 15 bags of fresh collards ready for the freezer, or your pot.

Times may have changed, but good food, hard work, and fresh-from-the-garden produce never go out of style.

15 bags ready for purchase. $15 per bag! Message me if you'd like to claim one before they're gone!

This is what happens when you start with fresh, local romaine.

A customer picked up romaine from the Tucker Urban Farm & Market and THIS is the salad she made.
Fresh. Crisp. Full of life. 💚 And here’s the best part, our romaine is the only farm ingredient in this bowl today. Look at the color, the crunch, the freshness...yummy!

Now imagine stopping by one local farm and getting everything for a fresh garden salad.

🌱 That’s our goal. That’s our plan. That’s Tucker Urban Farm & Market. More growing. More coming. Stay ready.
