I am predicting this right now.. Grass hoppers are gonna be fierce this year. You heard it.. Let's see if its just here on the farm or if it will be state-wide. Ugh..

Come get your fresh radishes at New Glarus Farmers Market on Friday 3:00-5:30 pm and Galena Illinois Farmers Market on Saturday 7:00-noon. Radishes are a spring and fall crop here in the midwest. These beauties are a favorite for many of my customers.. These are limited for this week and possibly next week and thats it until fall.

A friend just asked if we got any damage and I figured I didn't see anything structurewise that was damaged, so maybe we are all good.... But, I just took a closer look from out in the field..

Rows of various species of vegetable plants are blown over and so a person can tell within seconds which way the wind was coming from with this storm... The video will show the different coloring on some on the plants. The lighter green color v.s the darker green on these plants show wind damage; the lighter coloring is the damaged leaves. This wind damage could turn out alright or it could totally be a disaster. This all depends on the weather that comes afterwards. Factors that will be key is: will we get more of the same type of storm, will we get more severe wind and will it blow the same direction or change direction and damage the other sides of the plants, will we get excessive heat and or full sun that bakes those damaged leaves until they start to rot?... Will all these plants now be susceptible to diseases because of the natural accurances that happens to all living things even plants... I didn't even show the lettuce in the video because I saw this after the fact.. Farming is no joke, at any scale size. It's brutal. It's raw and it's real. But, when you can somehow shake it off and be determined to not let it beat you, and keep going then you will grow much more than just food. But with this kind of work we need the support and encouragement from others to help us get through what hasn't quite been destroyed. ❤️

Thank you for all of your support..

Anybody that truely has had a real conversation with me will smile by the end of this post.

It has been established that our driveway will tell us when it is safe to rototill and not only that but what type of our soil and where in the field could be worked up based on how much or little water is left in "the puddle". You see, we have accidentally esabished an area in the driveway that has lost all of its gravel and so we have a dip that will fill up with rainwater. We have learned that the amount of puddle left in that dip coincides with where in the field we can work the ground.. Its the most beautiful thing to have a conversation with our homestead without even speaking a word.. But what's even more beautiful is last year the puddle became the happening spot of serenading toads. A hopeless romantic set of toads returned to this puddle multiple times when the temperature was perfect for their spawning ritual.... Well, guess what.. They are back, it's the perfect temp and humidity. But this time, a green frog has joined the chorus along with multiple other toads... It makes me think of the movie Elf with Will Ferrell when his character falls in love and says this line........
"I'm in love, I'm in love, and I don't care who knows it!" Which has even more meaning to me because life is too short to get worked up by others' understanding of your life and what is best for you.

So there you have it, the dip/puddle in our driveway is in fact another great topic and conversation piece from yours truely. This spot in our driveway is very meaningful and represents much more than any 'ole passer by could ever, ever imagine... It represents my love for what good I see in everything around me... ❤️
