The Japanese maple is an incredible tree native to China, Japan, and Russia that flaunts vibrantly red leaves year-round. If trees create their own energy through photosynthesis, and chlorophyll which is needed for this process is green, then how do Japanese maples survive? As it turns out, these trees’ leaves do have chlorophyll, but in very small amounts. Because of this, they have a very slow metabolism and growing rate. The red leaves are a product of excessive amounts of a pigment called anthocyanim, which is used as protection from UV rays for the sensitive leaves.
