What is Diatomaceous Earth anyway?

Some folks call it dirt. Some call it magic.

Around Golden Acres, we call it one of the handiest things on the farm.

Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth is also known as “fossil shell flour” and can be used in pet bedding, brushed lightly on dogs and cats to help discourage fleas, sprinkled in dark corners to help with roaches, and added to dog or horse droppings to help keep flies from developing.

You can sprinkle a little around a fire ant mound to encourage those pesky ants to move somewhere other than your walking path. Bobbie says not to overdo it and to dust a light sprinkle. The ants will move on, and maybe go somewhere more useful… like helping with termites or yellow jackets.

Some folks even stir a little food grade D.E. into orange juice if they don’t mind the taste of mud.

A few important reminders:
Use FOOD GRADE only around animals, in the house, or for people
Do not use pool-grade D.E. for those purposes
Likewise, do not use food-grade D.E. in your pool
A little goes a long way

It’s time to plant your Mayhaw trees.

And we have them.

Varieties are:
Monticello Mayhaw
Double G
Red Champ
Surprise

$45 for 4-gallon pots and all over 5’ tall.

Now’s the time to plant.

Mayhaw trees will take a couple years to yield fruit but then you can make some jelly. It is really yummy and in the meantime if you want to try some homemade Mayhaw jellies… we sell those too.

Must pick up in Monticello.
