Got some new asparagus planted today as well as some potatoes. Peas and carrots have been seeded. Kale and spinach as well. Lots of other seedlings are started under lights. Broccoli and brussel sprouts should be ready to transplant into the garden next weekend. Wonderful weather the last couple of days!

It's been quite a while since we have posted. But here's a bit of an update. We have planted about 900 Christmas trees (Canaan fir) for a college fund plan. This will be the main focus of the farm for the next decade or so. But we've still got a small kitchen garden, giant pumpkins, and sunflowers planted as well as the fruit trees and blueberries doing their thing. Oh, and hops and hippity-hops. Have a great day!

The pigs are nearly ready and the pumpkins look good! I have not updated in a while. We got a blue ribbon at the Great Geauga County Fair for jack-o'-lantern pumpkin, a second place for sunflowers, and a number of rabbit ribbons for the kids including blue ribbon for our English lop doe and litter.

At the day job, I'll begin teaching my fourth quarter 'Chickens' class tomorrow. We have a flock of about 30 hens and 1 rooster. We are adding a dozen new birds this spring. Tomorrow, as an introduction to class our students will clean out the coop and nest boxes entirely. We'll have a discussion about the importance of keeping a coop clean. If you're raising your own backyard flock, this information from the University of Georgia Extensions is a handy source about taking care of your own birds' habitat.

We see (or hear) lots of fascinating birds around these parts, especially during migration seasons. A couple of weeks ago I saw a huge flock of Tundra Swans passing overhead. This morning we think we heard Sandhill Cranes passing overhead.

Spring may be holding out but things are moving along here at the farm. Making a bit of syrup. As mentioned, we picked up some ducklings and turkeys for meat, chicks for eggs, and a new red New Zealand buck for breeding meat rabbits. Today I ordered a bunch of seeds for planting later in the season. We'll be growing pumpkins and sunflowers for road side sales. Several varieties including those pictured below.
