“Nature will take back what is hers.”

- Proverb

I am so astounded at the sheer scope of nature and our small little place in it.

As a farmer, I watch nature, I play with her bounty, I seek to learn about the intricate web of her, the microscopics of her being.

I also try to tame her. I build fences, chop trees, and try to cultivate her. I fight her creatures great and small. I get frustrated by her stubbornness to conform to my needs.

Every morning and every evening I sit or stand on my porch and admire this little slice of nature I have to call mine. I may live walking distance to the beach, to tourists, restaurants, and little shops- but nature is still so alive here.

Today a bobcat drank from my pond and sauntered out and across the dahlia field. I was lucky enough to come outside at the perfect moment. It walked the path my groundhog ran earlier today- frantic to get away from me unseen. Not this cat- the bobcat stopped, took an uninterested look at my chicken coop and kept sauntering. Then it spotted me, following it. We made eye contact and it ran. But God it was beautiful and so wild looking.

My first thought was fear for my cats. They work on this farm just like I do and I saw how big this creature was.
I studied wild cats in college and never in my life had I seen a bobcat in Maine, in the wild. I know they are here, I just hadn’t been lucky enough.

This is my second sighting this week. One ran out in front of my car last week on a very busy street. I thought Wow! They are still here. Then the awe settles in. These gorgeous wild cats living right here on my property. Surrounded by the highway, construction, mono-cultured properties, yet they live on.

I’m stilled worried for my cats but I’m so grateful nature hasn’t thrown in the towel on us yet. I am so grateful to have this little wild space to let nature thrive.

Oh Lisi, this quote is so fitting. You have really converted me into a fancy flower lady. With your frills, your colors, your stem length and vase life. Swoon.

This flower is the one that turned the page for me, the flower that made me believe that this farm would thrive. She isn’t the easiest to grow, her seed to harvest timeline is 200 days, so 2/3 of the year babying these ladies. There are disease factors that can halt production pretty fast. But dang, she is still worth it.

Today I harvested the bulk of the rest of the lisianthus from the hoop house. The farm stand will have some gorgeous Lisi bouquets this week.

What’s your favorite color? Can you guess mine?

“You know why I’m selling you this? Cause you aren’t a bitch.”

- Aaron Hoke

This quote will live rent free in my head forever. It was the line delivered to me when my nearly 90 year old neighbor sold me his excavator and skid steer- the two pieces of equipment that quite literally built this farm along side Nick and I.

He came from a long line of farmers- past the Mason Dixon line. His wife from dairy farmers from the New York/Vermont line. And his sentiment was well received- we were friends.

Lucky for us, they aren’t the only friends on this journey. I am so grateful for all the friends that support us, guide us, laugh with us, feel our pain and disappointments.

I hope to give back as much as I am given. Today’s photo highlights two of those friends- as is appropriate from Open Farm Day

“Happiness and confidence are the prettiest things you can wear.”

- Taylor Swift

Let’s throw out a truth bomb- I don’t frolic in the flowers in a dress. If I happen to be a dress and find myself in the flowers, I can promise you that dress is no longer going to be dressy.

My husband jokes- that’s my wife, dirty fingernails. But there are dirty feet, b***s, legs, arms. There are big welts and cuts and bruises. There is the most rocking farmers tan on the planet- and most of it is on my back while my front side looks like it’s still spring.

But every once in a while, I get to dress up, have all the flowers and fit the esthetic. But what counts more is the genuine smile, the happiness to be doing what I’m doing and sharing it with you all.

Happy Monday everyone.
