We’ve been busy in the shop and just finished another batch of our beekeeping equipment!

Added a new tool to the toolkit today—an OA vaporizer for Varroa mite control. Keeping our bees healthy means investing in the right equipment, and this is one of the bigger investments we’ve made.

To keep everything protected and organized, we picked up a rugged Pelican case and stocked it with the batteries and all of the required PPE so everything is ready to go when it’s time to treat.

Healthy bees are productive bees, and we’re always looking for ways to improve our management practices. 🐝💪

Worked on a new version of our folding hive stand! 🐝

We’ve added a new feature that lets the center section double as a frame rest during hive inspections. It’s also perfect if you only want to run two hives, leaving the center open for your equipment, tools, or anything else you need within reach.

We’re always looking for ways to make beekeeping a little easier and more efficient. What do you think of this new design? 👇

One question I get a lot is why I paint my bee boxes so many different colors instead of making them all white.

While white is great for reflecting heat, I also like having a variety of colors. Honey bees can forage up to 3 miles from the hive before returning home. When they come back to the apiary, I believe having different-colored hives gives them more visual landmarks to help them find the correct colony.

For example, if they remember flying from a row with two blue hives and a pink hive, or a white, blue, and pink hive, it may make it easier for them to orient themselves than if every hive looks exactly the same.

There are several factors bees use to find home—including the sun, landmarks, scent, and the position of the hive—so color isn’t the only thing they rely on. But adding different colors is an easy way to give them another visual cue, and I enjoy the look of a colorful apiary too.

Here’s a look at some of the new equipment we’ve been building at Able Bee Co! 🐝

Every one of these hive boxes, lids, and bottom boards started out as nothing more than rough boards. From there, I cut every piece, added the dovetail handles, machined the frame rests, and assembled everything by hand.

I’m still working on improving production—especially speeding up the dovetail/box joint process—but it’s exciting to see the shop turning stacks of lumber into finished beekeeping equipment.

We’re hoping to have these available for sale in just a few more weeks, along with lots of other new products, just in time to help everyone start preparing their hives for winter. Stay tuned—there’s a lot more to come!

🌻 Take a look at these pollen baskets! Our bees are hard at work packing bright yellow sunflower pollen onto their legs before heading back to the hive. Every trip like this helps feed the next generation of bees and keeps the colony thriving.

Hive inspection day! 🐝

Spent some time going through the hives today checking brood patterns, queen activity, food stores, and overall colony health. It’s always exciting to see strong populations building and plenty of bees hard at work.

Regular inspections help catch issues early and keep colonies productive throughout the season. So far, the bees are looking good and staying busy!

Moved some swarm traps over to hives today and wanted to share one of the results. This colony has absolutely exploded and is packed with bees! 🐝

It’s always exciting to see a swarm trap turn into a thriving hive. Strong populations like this are a great reminder of why we put out traps in the first place.

Well, that’s it for me and swarm trapping this season! 🐝

I caught 4 swarms today—3 in my swarm traps and 1 from a family friend’s yard.

At this point, I’m officially pulling all of my swarm traps down and putting them into storage until next season. Not because the swarms have stopped, but because I’ve officially run out of equipment and places to put them!

It’s been a great swarm season, and I’m thankful for every colony that chose one of my traps as their new home. Now it’s time to focus on building these colonies up and getting them ready for the rest of the year.
