G.I. Acres

G.I. Acres G.I. Acres was started in 1965 when my father retired from a 20 year career in the Army as a Command Sergeant Major.

From this began a successful career raising SPF swine, specifically Hampshire's. After that, cattle were added and then a few sheep for my brother and sister's 4-H projects. The sheep came and went several times, until 1975 when the current flock was started at the beginning of my 4-H career. This year marks out 47th consecutive lamb crop. The farm has fluctuated over the years, venturing into sho

w pigs, AKC Rottweilers, and for several years a rather largeWhite Tail Deer herd. The one thing that has always been here has been the sheep. The flock number has fluctuated from a high of 150 head in the early 90s to the current flock size of 50 ewes.

Hectic day in the main barn as the first group of ewes are put in with the Rams. This will happen once a month for the next five months. Just to make sure we have a supply of Lamb throughout the year.

We get asked all the time about our hens and how they’re raised. Once they are out of the brooder, they’re placed out on large pastures, free-range, with grass. Do pasture-raised eggs cost more? Absolutely, but you get what you pay for - not only quality but flavor. This time of year, there are a lot of stores advertising $.99 a dozen, and a lot of smaller flocks in the $2 to $3 a dozen range. Do your own research and choose wisely. Cage-free or $.99 isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Summer lambs are growing, and in 14 days the cycle starts all over again. We plan on 20-25 ewes lambing each month from November to March. This helps us ensure we have lambs ready for processing at different times of the year, not all at once. We will have a heavy Suffolk influence on the lambs this year, utilizing rams we have purchased to achieve a larger size on mass.
