September 13th, 11 am to 3 p.m.-forage for wild foods, try simple spinning and weaving with sheep fiber, explore pollinator gardens, and see innovative farm technology in action, including a W**d Zapper and automated soil sampler. Walk through the trees, learn about birds and nature, meet farmers, and discover how conservation, technology, and agriculture can work together. How the Buffalo River also got its name because of Bison cooling off in the river but also this history segment. We live right by the Buffalo River and the ancestors always remember it as being more clear then now days.

This summer, we volunteered our land, time, and a whole lot of care to welcome teenagers experiencing homelessness to the farm for a weekly adventure—and what a summer it has been!

We’ve gone fishing, gardened, foraged, explored the farm, and worked on building a wood-fired oven. Welding is coming soon! The kids seem to love being out here, where they have room to explore, try new things, learn new skills, and enjoy being on the farm.

The greatest reward is when they ask, “What can we learn next?” That makes every bit of work worthwhile.

And we aren’t stopping when summer ends. Snowshoeing, sledding, and more adventures are already on the horizon!

Thank you to everyone who has pitched in, donated plants or supplies, shared their skills, or simply encouraged us along the way. It truly takes a community to give young people opportunities and a place where they know they are welcome.

Somewhere along the way, I think I became the town mom—and I’m pretty happy about that. The pay is zero, but benefits are priceless.

A very special thank-you to Lukas, our PAY intern. Wow, what a summer already! His hard work, patience, willingness to jump into anything, and ability to roll with our adventures have made such a difference. Every kid caught a large fish too!

Sometimes the best thing we can give a young person isn't something they can hold. It's time, a place to belong, and someone willing to say, “Come on, let's try it.”

From Doubting Thomas Farms.... Another reason to eat local US-grown food! This is from a food safety expert at UMN. Yes. There is no reason to think that any of our fruit and veggies have cyclospora on them. It is a parasite from contaminated irrigation water. If you use tested well water you are just fine. Cyclo almost always comes from other countries where they use contaminated water. I’ll write up an article and send it out tomorrow, thanks! I'll post this later!
