Exploring America, one bite at a time! We’re empty nesters that work remotely and travel in our Brinkley Z3100 5th wheel with our two Great Pyrenees mixes.

Travel Sites and Bites encompasses the idea of combining sightseeing with culinary experiences, by blogging about our travel destinations and their local food. This allows us on to take you with us, experiencing the culture, history, and natural beauty alongside the local flavors and cuisine. Ella is a Pryador and Gracie is a Pryedoodle, and both of them love destinations that include ice cream!

Medora is magical and I understand why Teddy Roosevelt fell in love with the area. However, it’s come a long way since he was here! The musical was fun, but the new Presidential Library was an amazing experience, along with exploring the town and driving the scenic loop in the South Unit.

Reservations for the library are a must! We made ours two weeks in advance and thankfully we did. While we were in line to get in, there was a woman offering her tickets for the next day, plus $100, trying to find someone to swap with her. They sell out, so if you plan on going, buy your tickets in advance.

You get an RFID wristband when you check in and they take your picture. As you go through the museum (more of a museum than it is a library), you scan your band and they will put you into the story of TR through the different periods of his life, then send you an email with your journal after you’re done. Also, plan on at least 4 hours to go through the museum… this isn’t a quick stop on your trip to Medora.

After our trip to the museum, we had a late lunch at a great little spot, walked around the downtown shops, then headed to the South Unit for the 26 mile loop. It was very nice and we saw wild horses, a heard of bison, and plenty of prairie dogs.

Friday night we had date night with dinner and a show in Medora! It was a fun time with the Pitch Fork Steak Fondue followed by the Medora Musical. We also enjoyed listening to Chloe Raye who performed during dinner; she has a beautiful voice!

Dinner was good, but I’m not going to be rushing to start deep frying my steaks in pork lard anytime soon, I’ll stick with grilled or sous vide. However, their process got about 600 people through the lines in about 40 minutes! Dinner opens at 5:30 and we were done and walked over to the theater before doors opened at 6:45. Definitely add the dinner onto the show for the full experience!

The musical was fun and a loose take on Teddy Roosevelt and his time here. The number of shows they perform every week during the summer is staggering, so props to the performers and crew for keeping their enthusiasm up with a grueling schedule. The amphitheater is beautiful and they have a very elaborate set where the backdrop is on tracks and they open it up to see the badlands in the back, the Medora sign, and at one point of the show they ride the horses up the hill. The moon added to the perfect evening. If/when we do it again, I’ll buy our tickets for stage right and a little higher up. We were 7 rows up and stage left, but the best seats I think would be about 12 rows back from the stage and stage center/right.

Last Saturday we left Glacier and had a long drive (770 miles and 14+ hours) to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, so we broke it up into 2 days.

I booked a site at the most highly rated campground near the midpoint of the drive, which was Old West RV Park in Reed Point, MT. It was a great one night stay, and in talking to them on our way out it turns out that the owner is also a colleague of mine at Sysco! Small world!

The drive south of Glacier was beautiful with lots of opportunities to take in the views. After 13 of our 14 hours going west to east through Montana, we finally reached the North Dakota border and soon after made it to our stop for the week at Oleo Acres RV in Fairfield, ND. The campground is halfway between the North and South Units of TRNP, and while it was perfect for this trip to the area, next time we come back we want to stay in/near Medora… we fell in love with that town… but more about that in my next post.

We had plans to visit the North Unit after work one night, and also to get some perogies at the local restaurant, Four Corners Cafe & Catering later in the week. There’s a large Ukrainian population in this section of ND, so I knew the perogies were going to be legit! I had been following their page for a year (when we booked the site) so to say I was anticipating them is an understatement. Turns out I almost didn’t get any… they had so many catering jobs the week we were there and nobody to staff the restaurant, they had to close! Luckily, the owner of the campground knows them and reached out on my behalf and after days of tag via Messenger, we were able to connect and I picked up 3 dozen perogies just 20 minutes before pulling out of our site. I don’t want to hijack a post about TRNP North any more, so I’ll post pics and descriptions when we cook them up.

Back to the North Unit! It was a solid 35 mile drive to the entrance from where we were staying, then a 26 mile out and back drive through the park. It’s a very nice park and these Badlands have more “life” than the ones in South Dakota.

Later in the week, since our Wednesday dinner plans were up in the air because Four Corners was closed, we found a great little place south of us in Belfield called Burger Junction. They knocked it out of the park and we had some great burgers for a very reasonable price. The homemade sauce on the mushroom-Swiss burger was OUTSTANDING, and the “blizzards” were excellent, too! If you get the chance to support local businesses, do it. They need us now more than ever!

Friday the skies cleared enough in Glacier to reveal the beauty and grandeur of the park. This time we drove Going to the Sun road in reverse, from St Mary’s to West Glacier, and after we crossed through Logan Pass the clouds lifted and exposed the mountains.

We will be back to experience this park in better weather, because what we saw was breathtaking.

During the week we ventured to a few spots that were close.

On Tuesday we went to Apgar Village on the southern end of Lake McDonald to see the painted rocks. Nicknamed the Rainbow Lake due to their vivid colors, the rocks tell a story about how they came to be. The red rocks formed in shallow water where exposure to air caused the iron in them to oxidize, and you can even see old ripple marks and mud cracks preserved in some of them. The green rocks formed in deeper water with less exposure to oxygen, so the iron oxidized much less. Unfortunately, with overcast skies the colors didn’t show through as much as they could have.

Wednesday night we hiked the Upper McDonald Creek Trail and John’s Lake Loop at the northern end of the lake so we could see the Sacred Dancing Cascade. It was a nice hike, and Katie even took a plunge in the cold mountain creek. However, Dawn was not thrilled with my underestimation of the distance or difficulty of the hike. I guess “about a loop around the pond” at home, does not equate when we’re in Glacier. My bad.

Unfortunately, it’s wildfire season and the smoke from the fires in Washington and Oregon put a damper on the views in Glacier National Park. We had a Red Bus tour booked for Monday, but canceled it due to the smoke and decided to do it ourselves and make the best of it.

We drove the Going to the Sun Road from West Glacier to St Mary’s, and while it was beautiful, visibility was not what it could be. It got better later in the week, but this week the area also got some much needed rain which, while great for the park and area, was not good for our time off plans, but it did help the smoke go away after the rain cleared. It was beautiful, but we’ve vowed to return either in early July or late September to get the best views.

We continued on and drove to the Many Glacier area for lunch at the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn followed by a quick hike to hopefully see moose! 🫎 We got a recommendation from someone who spends the season here and she said that we would see moose at Fishercap Lake, and she was 100% correct! We saw a female in the lake and stayed to watch her for quite some time. We were told by someone who was there before us that her calf was on the shore and well camouflaged, because we never saw it.

We returned to West Glacier the way we came, then went back to the camper to get the dogs and go to Freda’s for dinner and ice cream. Both were very good, but the ambience, the live music, and scenery were spectacular.

After leaving Grand Teton last Wednesday, we had the chance to slow down and rest a little before Glacier. On a long trip like this, days to relax are welcomed!

We stayed just north of Salmon, ID at a little place with only 9 spots. We were 30 minutes from civilization, but that’s nothing compared to the drive to get there! From Idaho Falls to Salmon was 2 hours of NOTHING! The only thing missing was a sign to check your fuel before getting on the road.

Staying near Salmon allowed us to visit with one of Dawn’s cousins who lives there, and we enjoyed our time together. The campground was next to the restaurant, so we also skipped cooking one night and had pizza. It was actually pretty good, and that’s coming from a native New Yorker!

On Saturday we moved to Glacier and got our shopping done, along with giving the girls a bath before picking Katie up from the airport!

Last Tuesday we got an early start because we knew the lines would be long and parking would fill up quickly for the Jenny Lake boat shuttle. You can’t buy tickets in advance and if you get there after 7:30am, the parking lot will be full and you have to start parking down the road. Even arriving at 7:15, we got one of the few remaining spots and had about a 30 minute wait for the boat across the lake. Do you need the boat? No, but it will add miles to your hike each way if you don’t take it. We opted for the round trip fare and just focused on hike to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point, with their sometimes steep and rocky incline.

It was a beautiful, albeit cold, morning for a hike. After taking the short ferry ride to the west side of the lake, we started our hike up the mountain. There are options to go deep into the backcountry and extend the hike up to 20 miles, but we decided to only go a little more than a mile up to the overlook and left the other options to more experienced hikers. The first stop was Hidden Falls which was a beautiful place to stop for a break. After taking in the view, we continued on to Inspiration Point. We got to the first turnout and we may have thought we were there already, but I pointed up the mountain to the second overlook and we continued on.

The last 100 yards was the most challenging for Dawn with a fear of heights and bad knees, but together we made it up the narrow rocky path to be able to enjoy the breathtaking view back east over Jenny Lake.

After walking down the mountain, we took the ferry back to the marina that we left from and called it a day. It was an incredible hike on a spectacular day meant for being outdoors.

On Monday we went to watch sunrise at Mormon Row, followed by Schwabacher Landing and breakfast at Dornan’s. We highly recommend all three, and the views at breakfast were spectacular! Breakfast was very good, especially their sourdough pancakes.

We returned to the camper for a quick break and to get Ella and Gracie to go into town and explore Jackson. It’s a great little town and turned out to be very dog friendly. We enjoyed our lunch at the Drug Store, but my burger was better than Dawns (we were not a fan of their huckleberry bbq sauce or onion straws). Then we treated the girls to some overpriced ice cream which they loved! We took the long way back to the camper after a little grocery shopping, and found a moose on Moose Wilson Road, followed by the big bull, “Hoback” just before we got back to Gros Ventre.

On Sunday we moved from Yellowstone to Grand Tetons, and as we were driving, our phones started going off with alerts about wildfire evacuations… luckily not near us, but the smoke cast a haze over the mountains and limited our visibility.

After getting set up at Gros Ventre Campground (pronounced “grow-vont”) we headed to the visitor center to get a map and stayed for the ranger program that taught us a little about the mountains. We also took the opportunity to mail a few postcards while we were there so they could be postmarked from Moose, WY!

Since we were already in Moose, we took a short hike to Moose Pond in search of its namesake, but due to the heat on Sunday there were no visitors. On our way back we were stopped by a few girls who asked for a ride and we were able to get them part of the way to their destination before turning north to drive the scenic loop on the shores of Jenny Lake.

After returning to the campground we spotted some fellow Brinkley owners who we had met before in Tennessee, and they invited us to where they “see moose every day”… except on Sunday 😂. At least we had a nice sunset, and while there were no moose today, we were successful the following day.
