THE END IS NEAR
We're talking about the dwindling of our tree stock, what with only a smattering of trees of marketable size and decent shape still standing out there in the field. As those of you who were here last year can attest, our inventory has become increasingly depleted.
DEER DEPREDATION
To further complicate matters, aggressive browsing by deer this past winter exacted a heavy toll on our trees, including many that otherwise would likely have been ready for harvest this season (see attached photo taken this past April).
THE PLAN
With such a limited selection this time around, we'd like to give 'first dibs' to our regular customers, those who've gotten a tree here at least one other time during the the past 29 years. It's always a delight to see fresh faces - folks from near and far who 'discover' our little tree farm for the very first time - but we feel a measure of obligation to the many others for whom Candy Cane Acres has become their annual 'tradition'.
Accordingly, we're reserving that very first weekend, the weekend after Thanksgiving, as a window for former customers to make their appearance and pick out a tree, either to take home with them or just to tag for later cutting. If you like, consider it a sort of 'affirmative action' plan.
NEXT YEAR?
Yes, there are still a handful of not-yet-mature trees, ones that should carry over for the next harvest season; however, because several, annual plantings of seedlings were flooded out, en masse, by that nine-inch rainfall five years ago (July of 2018), we anticipate - sooner or later, possibly next year even? - having to suspend our cut-your-own operation altogether. Guess we'll enjoy putting out our trail signs at least... one more time?
THE BIG PICTURE
John has been planting new trees - and trees of various varieties - each spring. What's more, with a dearth of rainfall these past couple of summers, he's been trying to water them regularly. He also put up fencing this fall, encircling each, new 'plantation' to hopefully deter deer traffic.
FELIZ NAVIDAD
If we don't get to see you this tree season, may you and your loved ones have a merry and memorable Christmas, and may you be encouraged by God's goodness in the new year ahead!
