The summer session of Agrarian Voices Study takes up Agricultural History: What Has Happened Here. Join us for a 4-week study of Wendell Berry's The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture.

First published in 1977, Berry wrote this book as a response to the USDA’s shameful mantra that we have a “surplus of farmers” and that those remaining ought to “get big or get out.” Unfortunately, this book is as relevant today as it was nearly fifty years ago. It may be more so.

Tuesdays June 9, 13, & 23, 5:30-7:00pm ET discussions (zoom & in-person options)
Tuesday, June 30, 10am-3pm, in-person Humanities Field Day at TBC Farm in Henry County, KY.

Spring is here! Lots of projects this past month as we experiment with low tunnels for the brassicas, peas are in, garlic is looking good, and the goats are enjoying their new cover. The seedlings are coming in strong. If interested, we will have a variety of seedlings for sale and thornless blackberry plants are ready to go.

We’re blessed here in Kentucky with the Berry Center’s Farm and Forest institute. While all the classes are great, the chainsaw classes are life saving. This past weekend I had the opportunity to take the advance chainsaw classes. Cannot recommend these courses enough, thanks to everyone at The Berry Center Farm & Forest Institute and The Berry Center!

As we close out the first full year on the farm, it’s true you learn so much more from mistakes.

In the garden I started way more seeds inside than needed. The vertical cucumbers and spaghetti squash were complete failures and the squash was a bit disappointing. Lesson, wood chips alone are not enough to control weeds and soil test every year. We’ve had good results using silage tarps for the fall cover crop and am prepping compost and lime for this spring. At least Teli’s tomatoes and herbs did ok!

We took over some chickens that were already on the farm, and lost a few. This year will include rain water barrels and fencing.

Also lost the male goat, so breeding high quality Kiko goats will have to wait a bit longer. Lots learned on small ruminants, enough that I feel good about introducing Cheviot sheep next year. More to learn on rotational grazing and parasites! Also, pretty obvious a well trained herding dog would really help.

We do have honey, vinegar, spice blends and hot sauce available, and later this year will likely introduce shepherding for a day opportunities. Here is a link to our updated website: https://www.middlegroundfarmky.com
