For years, China had been the team to beat at the International Mathematical Olympiad. Then in 2024, a group of six American students changed that.

Team USA finished in first place with an incredible performance, ending a long stretch in which China had dominated the competition. It wasn't luck or a last-minute surprise either. These students had spent years solving some of the hardest math problems in the world, often training for hours after school and on weekends. Their hard work paid off with five gold medals, one silver, and the top team score.

What I like most about this story is that it's a reminder that international competitions aren't just about sports. Sometimes, the biggest victories happen with nothing more than a pencil, paper, and a lot of patience.
