You want organic honey but dont want to feed sugar due to moral reasons?
I had this blockage in my mind for years till i had to reframe this, Lets show you what i ovserved if fall in same thinking. As a “beekeeper” Keep in mind of your intent ,You are not a factory honey producer right now; you are a bee guardian. Your observations about the your city or like my mountain desert environment are spot-on where one must be mindfull for the bees. The combination of intense heat, poor air quality, and the disruption of blooming cycles from recurring fires(as in Southern california) creates a severe ‘nectar dearth. This is a period where there is little to no natural food available.
In this situation, feeding your bees is not a moral failure—it is a moral responsibility.💡
Think of it this way: If you had a herd of cattle in a field where a drought had withered all the grass, would you feel bad about giving them hay? Of course not. You would be keeping them from starving.
You are doing the exact same thing for your bees. Right now, your feeding is not for honey production; it is survival. You are providing the essential carbohydrates they need to raise brood, maintain the colony’s population, and simply make it through this difficult period until a natural nectar flow returns.
So if your mind or someone try to make you feel bad for feeding your bees: No, you absolutely should not skip a weekly feed or any feed to make yourself feel better. And if you think Skipping a feed right now would be a moral victory, then Your wrong. It would be a direct blow to the health and stability of your colonies. The queen would stop laying, the population would crash, and you would risk losing all the progress you’ve made. What you are doing is good, necessary beekeeping. So I’m with you and hope this helps.
