I forgot to share pics of this beautiful baby boy! He was a singleton, born last Thursday to Rosie. He may look skinny, but this kid weighed 11 lbs at birth! I can’t wait to see how he grows out on his mama’s rich milk. 😍

Q: What do you do when your pantry is overflowing with eggs?

A: Why, you freeze dry them, of course!

I did a dozen eggs per tray, but will probably try 15 each next time. We should also be able to pack more into each quart jar next time if we do a better job at tamping them down.

No matter where I took my picture of these eggs, all the lighting messed with the color of the finished product, so I used a filter and made other small adjustments until my pic showed what we saw with our naked eye! These eggs are such a rich golden color! Next time, I’ll try taking the pic with natural light, but I waited too long today for that, lol.

Now, what do you all do with your eggshells?!? We rinse them out and then dry/cook them in the oven for a bit so that they become brittle. Then we crush them up and feed them back to the chickens as their calcium supplement (instead of buying oyster shells)!

Since this barely put a dent in our egg stash, we’ll put another load in the freezer tomorrow so it will be ready for a Sunday run in the freeze-dryer! No more buying eggs during the hens’ winter slowdown! 🙌🏻

We have one broody hen due to hatch out her babies in a few days and another just went broody!

We love being able to select which eggs to put under them. Here’s the ones we picked out for this mama! 😍

We have this long stretch of fence posts left behind from an old horse fence line - about 100 ft. We’re repurposing it into a grapevine fence line!

This year, we started by adding a few more posts in between the existing ones and then putting in 12 plants, some of them being the dormant one year old “sticks”. I sure hope those actually grow! They apparently have a guarantee that they will, but who know what the fine print on that promise is. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Next up for this year is to run our support system for the growing vines. I’m so excited for this investment!

Einkorn Cinnamon Twists for the win this morning!

It was my first time making them and it was from a recipe that calls for all-purpose Einkorn, so I’m playing around with it using fresh-milled Einkorn. I think I’ll try to let them rise for longer next time before baking. They were a little dense, but still delish, though!

We did end up having babies yesterday!

Simon was concerned that they were “yucky” from the birth fluids. 😆 He also was equally excited to see each new baby. All of my children had a front row seat (some literally sitting in chairs).

Gracie did an amazing job. I love how great of a mom she is. 🥰 Meet the two newest members to the herd! Twin does!

Funny side note - we’ve noticed that this particular sire always throws same s*x twins. Our other sire seems to throw one of each s*x. We’ll see if he keeps up with his pattern, too, when Rosie has hers in a few weeks!

Spring clean out day for the girls! Just as we were starting, Simon wanted to nurse and unexpectedly fell asleep. This playpen we recently purchased for the barn sure proved its worth as I was able to successfully transfer him into it, all bundled up and cozy. 🥰 Turned some scripture lullabies on and he slept for 2 hrs in there! Woot woot!

Gracie, our best birther, is due tomorrow, but she bagged up this morning and is having contractions, so the kids decided to anxiously sit and keep watch. 👀

Got the place cleaned up for her just in time! Now to attempt to get anymore work done while not wanting to miss the birth!

We had a first this week, dealing with water belly! 🫤

Our poor little Pip… aka Pipsqueak… aka Pippy Pip… aka Pippy Longstocking! She’s an original from when we started our flock five years ago. 💕

I was told that you’re not supposed to drain too much because it could send them into shock, so we did 5 or 6 of the 12 mL syringes and just let her body drain however much more it needed to on its own.

We’ll have to keep an eye on her, but I’m going to be looking into how to naturally support her health during this.
