When you have a substantial amount of outdoor work to attend to, you don't have the luxury of time to devote to cooking. You simply place a whole chicken on the smoker.

Today has been exceptionally busy. I received a call from the post office in Indianapolis at 1:30 this afternoon, informing me that I would need to collect my chicks there instead of having them delivered to Morgantown. As I was completing my chores, I attended to Ricky the guard goose, Mallard, and our little hen. Little hen had been brooding on a nest in the duck house for nearly 30 days. Initially, I had doubts about the successful hatching of ducklings, but this evening, she proudly showcased her newly hatched brood. Notably, Ricky, the guard goose, has already assumed a protective stance over the little ones.

These young actresses sought professional photographs for their acting résumés today. They are experiencing considerable anxiety regarding the upcoming film 'Sheep Detective', which is set to premiere in theaters. I informed them that Amazon Prime would be streaming it between July and August, and as a result, I was persuaded to purchase a projection screen TV so we can view it in the pasture. I wonder how the IRS will perceive my decision to write it off.

The rain continues to fall, but fortunately, the chickens remain dry. This is a fortunate circumstance for them. The wet conditions have triggered a feeding frenzy of earthworms and grubs. We have been making our daily movements with a layer of hay bedding to maintain their dry conditions.

Hello, for those who may not be familiar with us. Lonely Spruce Farmstead was established in 2020, commencing with our initial flock of 100 chickens. Over the years, we have implemented practices such as pasture-raised, non-GMO, grass-finished, and regenerative farming. We specialize in Cornish Cross pasture chicken, Red S*x Link egg layers, and grass-finished lamb. Notably, our poultry have never been administered antibiotics or vaccines. Our poultry are relocated to new pasture daily via Chicken Tractors, encouraging movement and foraging for insects and invertebrates. They receive fresh water and a specialized blend of non-GMO feed sourced from Sunrise Farms in Virginia. Our lambs are rotated between paddocks every other day, ensuring access to fresh pasture. We employ a 65-75 day rotational grazing system, thereby disrupting the parasite lifecycle and eliminating the need for chemical dewormers. This approach enables our livestock to thrive in a healthy and happy environment. Our 2026 schedule for farm markets is as follows: Columbus, Indiana Farm Market on Saturdays, Nashville, Indiana Farm Market on Sundays, Bargersville, Indiana Farmers Market on Wednesdays, and farm pickup on Mondays. Lonely Spruce offered an educational session this afternoon. Why do we relocate our sheep and poultry daily? How does this practice help minimize, if not eliminate, the ingestion of parasites? Additionally, it aids in keeping sickness at a minimum. We also discussed the benefits of allowing pastures to rest and recover. Unfortunately, the only attendees were the sheep themselves. But at least someone demonstrated interest! 😁
