In the last 2 months, the quality of hay, grain, and chicken food has really gone down the toilet in the East Mountain area and Corrales as well. Its so bad, my goats are losing weight and are acting hungry even though I give them a lot of food. My Lamanchas are getting really skinny… Daylilly, my Alfalfa expert, is refusing to chow down on the crap that I am buying. I can’t show my goats right now until I find quality hay. It used to be one vendor would have a bad batch. Now… all of the vendors I go to are selling old crusty hay at high prices. I have had a few vendors tell me that yes the hay is crusty but they have to sell it. The commercial grain products are no better… these are just empty calories that don’t even smell like real grains. The commercial chicken food sucks and doesn’t give the good egg production that we need. My mother cooks for the chickens and we buy the HVFM brand which isn’t horrible. But brands like AgLand, Nutrena, Blue Bonnett, Purina, etc… suck. For my goats to feel a little full, the Azure pellets do the trick. Also, from my conversations with farmers/ranchers in the area, the hay crops are going to suck because of this weather wacksmole (as Dane W would put it). It’s disturbing that people aren’t getting outraged about the crapola quality that is being presented along with the high price. Our food production is at stake.
My game plan right now… sell the place, find a place with decent browse and water, buy hay from farmers, and keep buying Azure Alfalfa pellets.
