Mites! As summer reaches its peak, so do the varroa mites. Mite populations will continue to climb, but bees population will start dropping. Heading into the summer dearth, this is a great time to do a summer treatment. We will put on 1 pad of formic pro, followed by another 7 days later between the two brood boxes. This is done when the day time highs do not exceed much over 80°f
We also feed 1:1 during this time. It helps mitigate any major bee or queen losses, and keeps the bees stimulated through the dearth.

Bears along with skunks are a regular around our bee yards. Skunks, can eat up to 3lbs of bees a night. This causes disruption to the hives and can cause the bees to be very irritable during the day.

Signs of skunks include matted down grass around the hives, holes dug around the hives, and of course skunk f***s.

Live traps baited with marshmallows are an easy way to trap and remove them. If you slowly walk up to the trap with a sheet or blanket, as seen, they are complete harmless and easy to remove.

Having adequate drones are very important to us this time of the year. We put drone brood frames in hives that have the highest quality traits, and specific genetics we are looking for the queens to mate with. Queens will mate with up to 25 different drones before their mating cycle is complete. Drones also are the first bees varroa mites goes after. So here we are testing out a few varroxan oxalic acids strips to keep mite counts low!

800+ queen cells every 4 days. We are in peak splitting season. Grafting, Making 400+ splits weekly, replacing older- less productive queens, selling queens, maintaining the starters (where we make our queens cells) moving bees, feeding, and treating for varroa. We are working 7 days a week. It's hot. We're tired. Diesel is expensive. But we have an amazing team and no one complains. 😅
