At Rooted Acres Ohio, we believe American families deserve affordable food AND American farmers deserve a fair opportunity to produce it.
We understand the frustration of families standing in the grocery store looking at the price of beef. We feel that frustration too. Food costs affect every household, and we absolutely want to see relief for working families.
But we also believe we need to look beyond the grocery shelf and ask an important question:
What happens to American agriculture when we try to solve a long-term supply problem with short-term imports?
President Trump’s announcement to temporarily allow up to 300,000 metric tons of additional imported beef into the United States may provide some short-term relief for consumers, but cattle producers across Ohio and the nation are understandably concerned about what this could mean for the American cattle industry. America does not need fewer farmers and ranchers.
We need more of them.
We need young people who want to raise cattle.
We need families who are willing to invest in livestock.
We need small and independent producers who can continue feeding their communities.
We need policies that make it possible for the next generation to inherit a viable farm—not one that has become impossible to operate.
If we truly want to rebuild the American cattle herd, we have to make raising American cattle economically sustainable.
At Rooted Acres Ohio, we believe the answer isn’t simply choosing farmers over consumers or consumers over farmers.
We need to find solutions that protect both.
Because when we lose American farms, we don’t just lose businesses.
We lose knowledge.
We lose stewardship.
We lose local food systems.
And eventually, we lose the ability to feed ourselves.
As an organization committed to agriculture education, we will continue encouraging families to understand where their food comes from, supporting local producers, teaching the next generation about agriculture, and advocating for an agricultural system where farm families can continue to grow, produce, and thrive.
We can care about the price of beef at the grocery store and care deeply about the rancher who worked for years to raise that animal.
Those two things should never have to be enemies.
