I'm pretty excited about this! Tell you Chef friends!
We have some unique microgreens growing!
1. They are super temperamental!
2. They taste fantastic!
3. Some historical research shows this specific plant was the goto for vitamin C before the explorers found citrus fruit in the new world.(edit: if you were not aware 'scurrvy' was a major problem for voyagers. We now know it's cause is lack of Vitamin C. Pretty impressive we knew about vitamins in the 1400's.
3.(a) yep, sorrel tastes like lemon lime spinach, and is very high in vitamin C.
3.(b) seed is sometimes hard to come by, and it takes a long time to grow. The red veined version is not only more flavourful (personal opinion) But it is also so much prettier, and is said to have a higher vitamin c content.
3. (C) sorrel seed, any variety, is very expensive, with red veined being the most expensive seed behind saffron (that cannot be grown except in very specific condition and harvested in a very specific way).
3. (D). But OMG, is it sooooo good. A sorrel salad with some parmesean cheese, some balsamic vinaigrette dressing, with some bacon, and croutons....get right out of town!
