FIFTEEN YEARS Certified Naturally Grown! We’re so proud of our growing practices and grateful for Certified Naturally Grown providing us a community based, grassroots alternative to Certified Organic. We sell 95% of our harvest direct-to-consumer and we want a list of standards, a third-party inspection, and a certification to objectively communicate to our customers information about how we treat the soil and plants here at our farm.

What does it mean to “grow all natural“ or “farm naturally”? Nothing, technically. The word “natural” isn’t regulated. However, “Certified Naturally Grown” means multiple parties join together to set standards, inspect a farm, review reports, and issue a Certification stating that the food you purchase from that farm is grown a certain way. What are those standards? In simplified terms, it means that we do NOT use synthetic chemicals or fertilizers or GMO’s and we DO use plant, animal, and mineral sources to build soil health, support plant health, and fight pests and disease. We use compost (some with bio char and basalt! ), clay, fish fertilizer, soap, plant oils, and many more amendments along those lines. Everything we use is OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) approved - which means it’s approved for use on Certified Naturally Grown and Certified Organic farms. Above and beyond what inputs we use, we also build soil health (and thus plant health *and nutritional content*) through how we treat the soil (minimal to no tillage) and the minerals we add so that your food is delicious and nourishing.

This is the 16th year of our farm in business, and we sought Certification as soon as we had a year of history to show our farming practices. 🚜 Hot pro tip: rumor is we may host a farm tour on Friday July 10th. Stay tuned!

Every year, starting the first week of June, a lot of customers ask if we have Spinach (and Arugula). Here’s photographic explanation of my answer: Every year I try to convince Spinach (and Arugula) to stay harvestable into the month of June. And every year those crops remind me who’s boss. They proceed with their life cycle at their pace. The plants grow tall as they start to form flowers, which produce seeds. Biology wins, every time. They primarily exist as organisms to reproduce - not as organisms with a drive to provide food for us humans.
Biology lesson for the day: ✅

Funny enough, this pic wasn’t staged with the child’s hand snagging some to eat. But this Romaine is so tasty that I left it on the counter as a suggestion for my kids to graze on while I worked outside. I swung thru the house a bit later and silently cheered as I could tell they had munched some. I decided to take a pic to let you all know that this Romaine is 100% snackable. And a child actually actually got his little hand in there to sn**ch some as I took the pic. It’s that delicious. 🥬
And to dispel any thought that my kids aren’t also typical kids, yesterday this child refused to eat his lunch salad. It happens.

Anyway - our vegetables are indeed more tasty than vegetables from other sources, and kids tell the truth with their taste buds. Soooo, please know that we have shares available for our Farm Share! People often ask if we save seeds from our crops to plant for future crops. The short answer is no, we don’t, because some crops need isolation from other varieties in their family, and we don’t have enough physical space to provide that isolation distance. Some crops take so long to go to seed that we don’t have time to wait for that stage in their lifecycle before we need to pull the post-harvest crop residue and quickly plant a new crop in the same space. For some crops, the part of the plant that holds the seeds is the part we harvest for you to eat — thus we hand the seeds over to you instead of keeping them. On top of that, some plant varieties we grow are hybrids, and their seeds won’t necessarily grow true to their mama and papa plants.

But - when we can, where we can, we leave plants to go to seed for the benefit of all. The bees and numerous other pollinators love the thousands of flowers that bloom. We love being around them. The soil stays covered longer. Etc. Win win win.
