Washington Co. Commission pulls meat processing facility rezoning from Monday schedule

Very sad to see this. And it's not the first one that's seemingly been shot down in our region. Small, local farmers are in DESPERATE need of more local processors! Many of our current facilities are booked up through 2024 and beyond. I understand the initial concerns of folks in the neighborhood. But just do some research. A facility like this will not be able to handle the kind of volume that would bring in noticeable traffic increases. We are talking about local farmers bringing in 1-5 head of cattle in a pickup truck and cattle trailer - not hundreds of animals by semi truck. And from my years of experience, there is no noise and no smell associated with this type of facility when done right. Some folks complain about the high price of local meat or express frustration with local farmers not being able to meet demand. This is part of the reason. https://www.wjhl.com/news/local/washington-co-commission-pulls-meat-processing-facility-rezoning-from-monday-schedule/

USDA rethinks approach to controlling salmonella in poultry

Our chickens are raised outside, on pasture. They eat bugs, grass, Non GMO & organic feed. At no time do we give them any medications. Know where your food comes, folks! These two paragraphs are pulled verbatim from the article below:

"The agency also wants to encourage farmers to take a combination of steps proven to reduce bacteria in their chickens, including using more vaccinations, adding probiotics to feed and doing more to ensure that the birds’ bedding, food and water remain clean.

The National Chicken Council trade group has said the industry has already done a several things to reduce salmonella contamination, including spraying germ-killing solutions on raw chicken during processing, improving sanitation and using more vaccines."

If you buy grassfed beef, even if it is labeled "Product of the USA," there is an 80% chance it has been on one of these cargo ships.

It has long been said that the best thing that a farmer can put on his land is his feet, and the best thing he can put on his livestock is his eyes. It should now be added that the best thing that a consumer can do is put their eye on their farmer and their feet on his/her farm.

Know who your farmer is, and visit their farm -- whether in person or virtually.

Looks like we have made the turn and are heading out of the hot dry days of summer. Thankful for cooler temperatures and rain when we can get it. It’s the time of year when cool season grasses are starting to grow again, but with our rotational grazing, we’ve had grass all year. Just happy to start having more now! #happycows #regenerativeagriculture #rotationalgrazing #grassfedbeef #grassfinishedbeef #pastureraised #knowyourfarmer #eatlocal

Happy Friday! And guess what’s happening this month? Last fall I had the privilege of heading to Bales Farms and having a chat with Barry Bales. We decided it might be fun to make a tune or two together. After some extensive schedule coordination, we’re heading into the studio at the end of June... It’s gonna be good 😁.

A #greenballoonchallenge ? This past week on a (seemingly) crazy days filled with work and worry (everything was fine, really), my daughter Lucy (age 7) out of the blue… err green… blew up this balloon, wrote a note, stuck it on said balloon, and gave it to me. Walked away without a word. Friends, it changed the course of my day. Screeching halt woke me up to the good stuff EVERYWHERE right in front of my highly distracted eyes. Hoping to share some encouragement, I posted a picture of my custom balloon-turned-day-maker. A creative Instagram friend (thanks Bales Farms !) suggested that everyone... anyone with a balloon, Post-it notes, and some spare air....could follow Lucy‘s lead by blowing up a balloon (any color really) writing a post-it note message, taking a picture, and sending it to someone near or far. It could be one balloon and one note. Maybe you do one balloon and 40 notes to 40 people. No balloons? You can draw one with a note penciled in. Think: Christmas card with no postage. (Ps: love ya USPS!). A friend already took the #greenballoonchallenge and sent a note of encouragement to her daughter. The recipient may at first feel perplexed. I was. Then I just felt love. And right now, that’s GOLD. Because 2020 done gave us enough challenges, imho. Here’s an idea for one that could spread some encouragement at a time when it’s needed, and it will cost you no more than a few pennies and a bit of time. Let me know how it goes.
Hello Bales Family~ We've been shoppers at the J.C. Natural Foods Market for many years and just learned from the owners yesterday about you guys, as we inquired about their supply of grass fed beef. Ironically enough too, we've been in the music business for 13 years with original songs professionally recorded. We've been music fans of Barry, Alison, Union Station since you began! We'd be honored to meet you all; we'd love to visit your farm and maybe share some music theory?! Thank you ever so much! The Brown Family (Gray, TN)
