It's February 8, 2022 and we had 55 degree temperatures here today. I knew it was going to be a good day when I went by the bees and the girls were already out flying. Saw activity in front of five hives so that is a good thing. If cared for properly, five colonies of bees are enough for the pollination around here plus will provide all the honey I need for sales. Five colonies is plenty of work for an old man too.

Today we are having some fairly warm weather for the twelfth day of January. Temperatures are in the upper 40's and the sun is shinning. While I was outside, I noticed some of the "girls" were out flying around the front of their hives. I am assuming these were "cleansing" flights since there isn't anything other reason for them to be out.

One of the disadvantages of a mild winter, especially one where the temperature goes up and down like a yoyo, is the bees may break their cluster and get caught out of it during a cold snap. Bees make a cluster during the winter to keep warm. It is an interesting concept. The bees on the outside of the cluster shiver to generate heat and as they cool, they migrate towards the center of the cluster. The new outer layer of bees will continue to shiver to provide heat for the group. When there is a warm spell in the weather the bees will leave their cluster and travel about in the hive. If there is a sudden drop in the temperature the bees may be caught away from the cluster and die of hypothermia.

That is today's lesson on wintering bees. 😂🤣

Spent some time this afternoon planning for next year's gardening season. Main emphasis was on tomatoes. How many of each variety and where to plant them. It won't be long before it will be time to start the seed. Also gave some consideration to what other vegetables and herbs I will grow this year. I have a vague idea of what I'll be growing, at this point, but would like firm it up before too much longer. While my main crop vegetables are fairly easy to decide on, I would like to find a few new vegetables to try this season.

We, here at Haines Family Farm, want to wish all of our friends a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy the holidays but be safe out there.

And so it begins. Started ordering vegetable seed for next season. I must admit I really don't like shopping but it's part of the business. Going with some of my favorites and naturally will try to new stuff just for kicks.

I wonder how these will grow next year. Probably sell good at market. Just saying.

I took advantage of today's nice fall weather and laid out the three caterpillar tunnels I am build for next year. Having no wind sure made things go a lot smoother since I was by myself. Got it all laid out, squared up and even got the anchor rods driving in for the first caterpillar tunnel. Now just two more to install anchor rods for, then I'll be ready to put up the bows. This project is moving right along.

It's not very often you see bees flying the last day of November. Today's bright sunshine. 55 degree temperature combined with no wind seemed to just draw the girls out. Had several nice sized groups out in front of my bee hives.
