I put in a late batch of eggs back 18 days ago and for the third time the Americanas hatching 3 days earlier then other breeds. It’s nice to see them hatching, but it creates a problem. Current thought is the last 3 days the eggs are in lock down meaning no opening and closing of the lid to control for higher humidity which keeps the chicks from getting shrink wrapped inside their inner shell (that thin layer that gets stuck to the egg white when you hard boil eggs). Chicks, though once they hatch, ought to be getting feed and water at 24 hours. The dilemma created is to either see if the chick can last three days without food and water or remove the chick fast enough and add more humidity in hopes of not disturbing the other chicks. IT is a serious problem and the number one cause of death I have had to deal with with chicks.

The baby chicks (9) and teen chicks (6) are figuring out the coop thing. Now prepping for another batch. Seeing as half are likely roosters and our 6 laying hens are 3 plus years old this winter and will need replacing, I plan to hatch it a few extra just in case.

So happy to have a couple browsers on the farm. They love the invasive elms that pop up every where. The Nanny is Juneau who is a fifty, fifty cross Alpine/Nubian and her doeling, Sister, is three quarter Nubian, a quarter alpine. The mama is going a good job showing her the good things to eat.

Before and after mowing! Time to get the chisel and tiller (if needed) out.

Our predator patrol is sure enjoying the spring sunshine after a night on duty. Ruff is the self appointed coyote control dog. He faithful spends his time making sure the chickens and household is safe of which we are very grateful. Haven't lost a hen yet.

The bright green row is a double row of lilies that come in lovely yellows, burgundy and orange. There is also a row of peonies just out of the photo. Over the next couple weeks rows of potatoes, onions, peas, cabbage and radishes will be added.

I am so happy spring is here!

Time to plant onions. These are a sweet kind that will be ready come mid June.
