I didn’t anticipate having to write this really hard post. I was hoping to make a joyful post about a new baby calf. But unfortunately there are the disappointing & downright heartbreaking realities of farm life. Things don’t always go the way you want them to. They say when you own livestock you have deadstock. It’s the cycle of life. My sweet Annie went into labor this morning. Within about an hour & a half it became clear something was not right. I was only seeing one hoof & it was huge. Annie is a mini Hereford so not a very big girl. There was no way I was going to be able to pull this calf out by myself. Thank God for our friends Lacey & Jake Allen who came as soon as I called. Annie had one hoof & part of the head out but the other leg was tucked back inside with no room to get it moved forward. It took 3 of us pulling to get the calf out. We did everything we could to save Annie’s bull calf but we were unsuccessful. He was just too big & stuck for too long. It was such a traumatic birth for Annie that she took one sniff of him & was over it. Which is probably a good thing mentally for her so she doesn’t continue to grieve. After waiting all these months in anticipation for this addition, I am so sad that instead of loving on this little one I’m having to bury him. But I know that is what farm life is all about, life & death. We don’t always get the sunshine & rainbows. The good thing is Annie is doing ok. She’s a tough cookie & I’ll get her back in with her herd soon.
Wish I had a more joyous post but we move on from here. Tilly is next to calve in a couple of weeks. So we’re going to pray all goes well & we have a healthy calf on the ground! 🙏🏻
Thank you to Lacey & Jake for rushing to help me & my sis Cindy for being there for moral support. I couldn’t have done any of this on my own! Cows have their herd & I have mine! Best support system ever!

Ok y'all! Here's the transformation of the Vanderbeck cow barn. The first photos are basically how my dad left it. It was packed with junk! 88 years worth of junk! It was literally falling apart! Boards were rotten, windows broke & boarded up, dirt & cobwebs everywhere! Oh, and the electrical? I had 2 working light bulbs & 1 working outlet. Wiring was the original from 1938!
My grandmother Antoinette moved to the farm in 1936. She was a widow with a grown stepson and 2 young sons of her own...my Uncle Wh**ey who was 11 & my dad Wilbur who was 5 years old.
She started building this dairy barn in 1938, finishing in 1939. She was a grade A dairy woman, milking up to a 55 head herd of all registered Jersey cows. She also had her prize bulls that she showed at fair. Once the dairy was discontinued in the mid 1950's my dad kept a few cows over the years moving into Herefords & then switching to Angus. But the barn has deteriorated over the years with no one keeping up with the maintenance of it. The old milking parlor was tore down in the 1980's.
This is a compilation of photos over the last year of all the work we have done. I now have 1 large stall & 1 small one with new doors & windows, 4 new stalls on the south side, new end doors to make cleaning out the stalls easier & a wash room where I can bathe the cows. The old silos will eventually be partially opened up (keeping the integrity of the structures) & used as my feed & tack rooms. My contractor Jose' Olloqui has been amazing bringing my vision of making this barn functional for me to life & to Rite Way Electric for providing me with MORE POWER (& light)!
My mini cows are very spoiled! Here's to at least 88 more years of this barn standing tall! Hope I've made you proud Antoinette!

Another Mini Moo Crew introduction…this is Apple (named by my 5 year old grandson Barrett). Apple isn’t really a “Mini”…he’s actually full Angus. Apple & his twin were born on Mother’s Day 2025. Unfortunately Apple was a runt & mom rejected him. Since she was the lead cow, the rest of the herd rejected him too. So I intervened & took him to the barn. Honestly I wasn’t sure he would make it. After a few days he perked up. Once he was big enough I tried integrating him back in with the herd but they treated him like an outcast & he was so sad. So I decided to move him in with Annie & my other 2 mini Herefords who I will introduce later. He was instantly happier!
Today he’s a big boy but I still keep him with the only herd who has accepted him. I have steered him so at this point he’s a companion calf! I’m the only mom he has ever known so he always comes when I call him, mainly because he thinks I have food 😂
Apple will always be my “bottle baby!”

And stay tuned for more on Annie! We are officially on baby watch! 🙏🏻
