Unfortunately we had some plumbing issues at home today beyond our scope of expertise so tonight will be sponge baths and doing dishes outside with a garden hose while we wait on repairs. 🤣 Our whole kitchen and laundry room got flooded with toilet overflow + grey water from washer. Instincts were acceptable to shut off toilet first thing, get a ton of towels and start cleanup. Thankfully this happened BEFORE hunting season and while we were home so it didn't ruin anything. Just tons of cleanup 😬

Still got our gooseberries weeded and mulched though, plus all the usual barn chores. I've been putting the mulch in a tarped cart to haul it instead of wheelbarrows. Now husband is cutting up a little deer for our freezer. Thankfully that's the last thing on the list for today!! 😮‍💨

Anyways, here's some chickies in their brooders! Once they're a little bigger they'll get moved to pens. We're raising various ones to pullet age, and have another hatch coming up in a few days.

Mulching for fall/winter. We got behind on keeping weeds down around our new orchard plantings, so now I'm removing weeds and putting down wood chips. Once orchard plantings and landscaping beds are done... I'll redo our mulched garden paths. We've used Chipdrop and I'll also reach out to tree service companies on Facebook or IRL to ask if they have some wood chips available. Posting a request on Chipdrop right after there's severe weather in your area seems to work better than normal!

Stayed up late last night processing a deer that someone hit with their car, and got a bunch of chicken waterers / feeders for very cheap. 👍 However, this morning... had to cull my favorite chicken due to an injured leg that wasn't improving. Can't have blessings without hardship I suppose. We've had her all year. She would follow me around and follow me up ladders while I worked, which admittedly wasn't the safest but was endearing. 🤔 She got a last meal of some sunflower seeds. 🌻

Angelic creature 🥰

Have finished rebuilding our quail population after a raccoon chewed through our coop door. It is now reinforced with a metal panel. Thank you to everyone who sold me breeding stock to help me rebuild!!!

There's lots of juveniles that will lay soon. Eventually we will have to reduce rooster numbers. So far people have liked buying their eggs at farmers' markets, and we like eating them too. Time will tell if quail end up being worth it. They're very cute... so I hope so!! 🐣

Marans 🤎🤎 Darker line and then speckled layers as well 🥰

Remnant Homestead recently raised out some of our Black Copper Marans line and placed at fair, give them a follow! :)



Some things I am content with in our line are: body type, egg color, health, copper coloration, and behavior. However I do need to continue selecting towards even foot feathering as occasional chicks are over or under feathered. Plus I'll try to keep getting the eggs ✨ darker ✨.

Had to move half our Cornish X (approx 20) out of a chicken tractor onto heat. In summer I can usually get them out of their brooders and off heat pretty early! However we just had a ridiculous thunderstorm come through (next town over thinks there was a tornado). I'd believe it, the lighting was so frequent it looked like day. So the chicks got chilled, colder than human temperature and doing the "help me" chick peep. It's only half that got soaked because half went under their shelter while the others decided to stand in the rain. 🙄 Soooo I'm soaked now too but at least they won't get cold tonight.
