FIRST SERVICEBERRIES!! This is probably all we will get for the year but I didn't think we'd get any yet, the plants are still pretty little. Enough for everyone to try one. They are similar to a a blueberry. I wanted to have some plants in orchard that fruit "early" to maximize how long we have fruit available throughout the year.

Meta AI is finally done saying we almost got hit by a tornado, for awhile the summary wanted to be all dramatic saying we "survived" when it was 10 minutes away 🀣🀣🀣

Now it's back to being informative for customers. πŸ₯³

Doing some re-organization in our juvenile barn. Planning to split this stock tank we got for free πŸ€ͺ into four separate brooders with lids. We also got some more IBC tanks to cut in half and use as brooders. πŸ₯³

There's going to be Cornish X and more production layers for farmers markets next year in the brooders.

The plan is to breed a s*xable crossbred via feathering rates with Leghorns and New Hampshires. If that does not work well in the chicks I will have to just breed Leghorns or try another s*x linked crossbred for my production layers. πŸ€”πŸ€”

I will test some juveniles from each of several separate hatches to make sure they do not have Mycoplasma, then combine them into one group in coops that have access to the outdoors. They have been in indoor pens so far their whole life so we are excited to get them free ranging. They will be our breeding stock for next year. πŸ“

The cat distribution system granted us a mom and kittens. Everyone except these guys and another stray male who also showed up are fixed. Trying to get some domesticated to re-home... will fix the mom and one kitten to keep once they are weaned.

Was calling this one Hissling and mom Swivel because of her watching food approaching.

Used the full 250-dose of the Marek's shots to vacc1nate four brooders and two pens of our juveniles. We usually do things all natural but this is the exception. It is a poultry herpesvirus, lasts a long time in the environment, and can be spread by dander. Marek's has a high mortality rate in poultry so I do try to reduce risk by vacc1nation. There can still be spreading and breakthrough cases in vacc1nated birds, but goal is to reduce likelihood of severe symptoms such as blindness, tumors, wasting etc that Marek's can bring. I hold skin at neck like a kitten, sh0t goes directly through skin at neck not into muscle, bird goes back into its pen. You do have to be careful since chicks are small. The usual Marek's vacc1ne doses are 1000 dose shots so I buy one split into 250 then try to inoculate in batches. Ideally you vacc1nate them all at hatch but this has been our compromise as a small producer. This way people who buy pullets from us don't have to worry about putting them in an environment with other chickens who could possibly be carriers, wild bird exposure, etc.

Potatoes, garlic, blackberries, the last of our spinach, some misc flowers, kale, beets. I tossed weeds out into lawn to get mowed in next time. Potatoes will be hilled soon. Garlic just had its scapes harvested. Kale is not quite ready yet unfortunately... got it started too late this year!

Re-arranged breeding pens so I'll take a nice 4 week break from incubation. After that we can hatch one more round then take another longer break to avoid having *too* many birds reaching laying age in the dead of winter. That is an effective way to have spring layers... but can be hard on the birds and delay age of lay.

The reason for the 4 week break is that hens store sp3rm from a rooster for quite some time. I want to ensure genetic purity to avoid hatching barnyard mixes. We don't want any Maury situations on our hands. IFKYK

Some of them are re-establishing pecking order, which is fine provided no one hurts one another.

Got some more layers for the farmers market because folks really like their fresh pastured eggs 🀣

Lastly, will put down new bedding tonight once it is dark so none of the newbies make a break for it... and everyone will settle in.
