My husband surprised me today with the most incredibly thoughtful gift- A 1910 hardbound edition of the American Poultry Standard! According to Google - this book was noted for being a rare edition that briefly introduced early color feather illustrations and original copies are considered scarce collectors items.

I found a handwritten inscription inside the front cover written by the original owner of this book:

Archie L. Ingersoll
Manhattan, Kansas

A quick search returned a genealogy record for an Archie Lee Ingersoll born in Kansas in 1890. I don’t know if that’s the same person or not but regardless, it’s a tiny piece of evidence about who physically held this particular copy more than a century ago.

I absolutely love that this old book has a story that started long before it landed on my shelf, and now it’s in my hands to carry on the work of those who came before me. 116 years later and the Standard is still shaping the way we look at our birds today.

Interestingly - silkies only got a very brief, 2 page description with no photos. But check out the polish! They’ve always been such beautiful, regal birds!
