When your dear friend and Shirelings Haven Silkies asks if you will go with her to Tennessee to visit the very person who inspired your love of mottled silkies so many years ago, you clear your schedule and hop in the car! What a privilege it was to spend some time hanging out and chatting chickens with the one and only Diva Girl Silkies!

I’ve said this many times, but one of my favorite things about this hobby is that it’s never just about the birds. It’s about the friendships, the shared passion, and the people who are willing to help each other grow and improve.

These are not just baby chicks, they represent years of Becky’s talent, hard work and dedication, and we’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue her legacy here on our little farm.

I’m absolutely obsessed with these squishy chonky babiessss 😍

Please take a moment to read this informative post by an amazing breeder! There are no such things as “show quality” or even “breeder quality” chicks. I rarely part with chicks or hatching eggs and grow almost everything out because it takes MONTHS to see a bird’s true potential.

Does anyone ever feel like you are your chickens unpaid employee? No? Just me? 😂

This weekend’s agenda included wing banding, vaccinating and spreadsheet updating for the fiftyelevenhundred baby chicks we’ve hatched over the last 2 months.

Every chick is carefully documented right from hatch. Tracking lineage, hatch dates, growth, type, traits, and overall health helps us make thoughtful breeding decisions and continue improving each generation.

Record keeping may not be the most glamorous aspect of breeding, but it’s definitely one of the most important 🩷

I took a little road trip this weekend with some of my best friends to Ohio for the Silkie Eastern Nationals Show and it far exceeded every possible expectation I had! Not sure I can do it justice in one post but I’ll try 😅

Getting to meet the buff QUEEN herself -Ms. 𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐲𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐬 has been on my silkie bucket list for years and she was so amazing! She told me to pull up my chair beside her and she poured wisdom and knowledge into me all weekend. She sent me home with a few amazing birds that I’m excited to work with and then gave me hatching eggs as I was leaving. Talk about winning the silkie lottery!!

Janelle and Matt Stonebrook Silkies brought all the tailgate vibes and welcomed us in as if they had known us for years. Matt was a master on the grill and kept us fed with delicious food all weekend long. Literally the most fun I’ve ever had at a show!

I finally got to meet the person responsible for igniting our love of buff silkies (especially my daughters). The first quality birds we ever owned came from him and my buffs wouldn’t be where they are today without this man- OhCountryboy Farms Silkies 🧡

I got to cheer BIG for my sweet friends who brought home some incredible wins in black, paint, partridge and NSV. We shared endless laughs and somehow managed to talk chickens for 3 days straight 😂 Lagom Farm Amanda Bryan

I could go on and on with the tags and shoutouts. Life hasn’t been easy lately and many of us are carrying heavy burdens during this season of life. My birds were a hot mess and most ended up getting left at home, but my heart needed this weekend. Thankful for the love, the laughter and the memories we will be talking about for a long time to come.

My mottled girls took best and reserve variety and my buff pullet got 5th in an absolutely incredible class. So grateful to see a number on my card and ready to get back to the barn and go to work for next season - we are ending this one on the biggest high 🧡

Hey friends! I wanted to take a moment to check in and apologize for being MIA these past few weeks.

Our family has been navigating a very sudden and very unexpected turn of events. Someone we love very much is fighting a hard battle against stage 4 cancer and it has completely shifted our focus. Right now, my time and energy are being spent where they’re needed most, and as much as I love this page and this community, my farm page just isn’t my priority at the moment.

I’m no longer able to attend the show in Dickson this weekend and I deeply apologize to those I had arranged egg trades and bird pickups with.

I managed to ship out the last outstanding egg order I had on Monday and am now pausing everything else for the time being. I have an inbox full of messages, and I promise I will get back to you as I’m able. I truly appreciate your patience and understanding more than I can put into words.

Thank you for giving me a little grace during this time. We are so grateful for any and all prayers you would like to send up🤍
